Hamilton, Lewis

Hamilton, LewisHamilton, annoyed at not overtaking Vettel in Spain, has been identifying the people who “blocked” him.
With Vettel beating Hamilton by less than a second in Spain, Hamilton has more than enough reason to be disappointed. However, as usual the blame is not with Hamilton, it was first Schumacher and then the Toro Rossos of blocking his pursuit of the charging Vettel.

Schumacher was less than impressed after Hamilton commented “I won’t speak to him about it – I don’t want to waste my time or my breath.” To which Schumacher responded,
“I don’t recall this, and I think it wouldn’t make sense.” Mostly in your old age you don’t remember allot and also allot does not make much sense, but in this case Schumacher is right, it does not make sense.

But not content with the Schumacher repost, Hamilton went after Team Toro Rosso remarking that they too had blocked him: “That kind of thing shouldn’t happen because they are not supposed to be a sister team, are they?” Hamilton said. “Definitely in the last race there was some of that … all of a sudden moving in my way, which caused a bigger gap, the gap that I closed to Sebastian and I then lost. They let him past and held me up for the next couple of corners.

“If that continues to happen, some penalties should probably be handed out. I won’t complain but I have mentioned it to my team so it is for them to approach the FIA to make sure the stewards are aware of it.”

Red Bull Racing General Pit stop blunder 5 pts When Vettel pitted on lap 17, the tyres did not want to be changed.

The new front right tyre refused to come out of it’s blanket in time to be put on the car. This lead to Webber’s following stop to be compromised as Vettel was late leaving his stop. Webber managed a stop of 16.5 seconds as his tyres were not ready when he arrived.

Glock, Timo (Virgin Racing) Off the track 1 pts Cut the chicane avoiding the two Mercedes of Rosberg and Schumacher.

23
McLaren General Pit stop blunder 5 pts The Mclaren pit crew were not ready for Hamilton’s arrival in the pits resulting in a 9.7 second stop.

23
di Resta, Paul (Force India) Unsportsman like driving Drive through penalty 8 pts On Lap 26 di Resta forced his way past Alguersuari.

In the Loews hairpin, di Resta came up the inside of Alguersuari, using the pavement to make some space. The result was that di Resta made heavy contact with Alguersuari and the two were somewhat locked together.

Di Resta made it past but was punished with a drive through penalty for a causing an avoidable accident.

26
Glock, Timo (Virgin Racing) Suspension failure 10 pts Retired with suspension failure.

33
Hamilton, Lewis (McLaren) Unsportsman like driving Drive through penalty 8 pts Hamilton forced his way past Massa at the hairpin.

In an attempt to get by, Hamilton muscled his way past at the Loews hairpin. The resulting contact caused the drivers to be locked together but Hamilton made is past Massa only for Massa to attack and get his place back.

Hamilton was penalized with a drive through penalty for causing an avoidable accident but after the race the British driver firmly put the blame with Massa accusing him of turning in early.

34
Massa, Felipe (Ferrari) Crash due to driver error level 6Causing safety car to come out 10 pts After contact at Loews and after being forced on the marbles, Massa lost control in the tunnel.

In a continuation of the battle from Loews, Hamilton and Massa were side by side through the tunnel. Massa, on the outside in the marbles, his the barriers damaging his car significantly.

66
Sutil, Adrian (Force India) Crash due to driver error level 6 6 pts Collided with the barriers in Tabac.

Maldonado overtook Sutil on the inside into Tabac causing Sutil to run wide on the dirty part of the track. Sutil impacted with a glancing blow the barriers which instantly destroyed his right rear tyre.

Sutil limped on through the lap, but became the catalyst for the nest accident.

69
Hamilton, Lewis (McLaren) Caused a multiple pile-up level 4Causing safety car to come outCausing a Red Flag 17 pts With the limping Sutil, Hamilton took the brakes to avoid any potential collision, triggering a mutliple car pile up.

Sutil was running on the outside of the track with the pack (including the race leaders) bearing down on him. Hamilton, who had overtaken one of the Renaults, was leading this pack through the entrance to the swimming pool as the damaged Sutil cut the chicane and came back toward the track.

Hamilton, not wanting a further collision reacted by slowing down to see what Sutil would do, however this drop in speed caused Alguersuari to run into the back of him and in turn Petrov to run into Alguersuari. Both Alguersuari and Petrov made heavy contact with the barriers on the outside of the turn and the following cars picked their way through the wreckage.

The leaders had been very lucky not to crash in this incident but both Petrov and Alguersuari were instantly out.

The safety car was deployed to clean up the mess but it soon became apparent the Petrov had not exited his car. With a lack of sensation in his legs the track medics needed to extract the driver in his seat and the race was red flagged on lap 72 to enable this to happen safely.

The drivers return to the grid where Hamilton had repair work on his car. The race resumed on lap 73 after one additional lap behind the safety car.

69
Hamilton, Lewis (McLaren) Unsportsman like driving Time Penalty 8 pts Attacked Maldonado up the inside into St Devote.

Hamilton, desperate to make this race a good one, attached Maldonado, however, Hamilton ended up barging his way past the rookie driver taking the bollard with him.

Maldonado came of worse and ended up in the barriers at st Devote.

The stewards did not take kindly to this maneuver, much like the one he did on Massa and handed him a 20 second penalty. This ultimately did not affect Lewis’ position in the final race results.

74
Hamilton, Lewis (McLaren) Mouthing off 5 pts Lashed out at the race stewards and anyone that got in his way.

Interviewed by the BBC, a clearly frustrated Hamilton, lashed out at the race stewards. He labeled their decisions an “an absolute joke” after receiving two penalties on Sunday (overtakes on Massa and Maldonado).

“You know what? Out of six races, I’ve been to the stewards five times,” a furious Hamilton told the BBC. .

He continued, “It’s a joke. It’s an absolute frickin’ joke. You can’t overtake here and very rarely do you get an opportunity. I went up the inside of Massa and the guy turned so early and just turned into me, so I tried to go over the kerb to avoid him and we’re stuck together, so it was just…and of course I get the penalty, which is usual.

“He held me up in qualifying and I got the penalty. He turned into me (today) in and I got the penalty. Then I went up the inside of Maldonado, and you can see on the screen that he turned a good car length too early to stop me from overtaking him, and crashed into me. It’s just ridiculous, man. These drivers are frickin’ ridiculous, it’s stupid.”

However, Hamilton did not stop there, he continue to remark (part jokingly) why he received the attention from the stewards:

“Maybe it’s because I’m black – that’s what Ali G says. I don’t know. It’s not affecting my confidence as a driver. The sport is… people want to see motor racing, want to see overtaking, and you get done for trying to overtake, you get done for trying to put on a show, you get done for trying to make a move.

“Fair play – if I really feel that I’ve just gone too late and hit someone, I’ll put my hand up and realise, okay, I really have caused and incident and I’ve been the stupid one. But it’s not the case, but yeah.

“I’ll just keep my mouth shut and try and enjoy the rest of the season, which I’m sure is going to be an interesting one, but as you can see he (Vettel) is walking away with it. It’s never too late but it’s not looking great, I must say.”

Qualifying
Alguersuari, Jaime (Scuderia Toro Rosso) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Gave Kobayashi a love tap at the end of the lap in Q1

Hamilton, Lewis (Ferrari) Hand Signals (offensive)Lose of grid place 9 pts Slowed by Masssa Hamilton expressed some feelings towards him.

The result was that he was dropped to 9th place on the grid.

Perez, Sergio (Sauber) Crash due to driver error level 8 8 pts Crashed on the downhill section after the tunnel.

Unlike the other accidents on the downhill section this weekend, Perez was less lucky in that he impacted on the barriers that separate the escape lane and the straight after the chicane.

Perez, who was performing well in the Sauber, slid out of control, impacting the barriers at significant speed coming to a rest in less than 2 meters. It was clear that Perez, motionless in the cockpit, had been knocked out by the impact.

The session was rightly red flagged which left just 2 and a half minutes on the clock. This effectively ended qualifying with most other drivers unable to improve their times.

Perez was essentially unhurt but was taken to hospital where he spent a number of nights recovering from the concussion.

Sutil, Adrian (Force India) Mouthing off 5 pts Sutil blamed Petrov for holding him up during qualifying.

Sutil said about the incident: “It’s disappointing that we couldn’t fight for Q3, but the pace was not there today,” Sutil began. “I was bit unlucky on my last run in Q2, when Petrov wasn’t watching his mirrors and I had to abort one of my flying laps. I did another lap, but my tyres were going off by then and so I probably could have been a little bit higher up.”

Practice
Webber, Mark (Red Bull Racing) Transmission problem 4 pts Gearbox issues.

Liuzzi, Vitantonio (Hispania Racing) Crash due to driver error level 4 4 pts Crashed on the downhill from the tunnel.

Luizzi failed to make it out onto the track for the remainder of the day.

Schumacher, Michael (Mercedes Grand Prix) Crash due to driver error level 4 4 pts Crashed in St Devote after running wide.

Schumacher, slid along on the newly-laid St. Devote tarmac, tried to turn out of the corner but whacked the barriers with the right-hand side of his car. This incident delayed the start of FP1 whilst the track officials made repairs to the barrier.

Kovalainen had a number of little offs but rejoined the track each time without any damage.

di Resta, Paul (Force India) Transmission problem 4 pts Gearbox issues.

Petrov, Vitaly (Renault) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Lost his front wing.

Petrov lost control of his car as he reached the braking zone for the chicane and knocked his wing off on the outside barrier.

Buemi, Sebastien (Scuderia Toro Rosso) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Clipped the barriers in Tabac.

Right at the end of the second session Buemi clipped the barrier at Tabac with the rear of the car, doing some damage to the rear suspension and had to pit.

Liuzzi, Vitantonio (Hispania Racing) Crash due to driver error level 4 4 pts Crashed in St Devote in FP3.

Liuzzi, trying to control an uncontralable Hispania, slide sideways into the barriers on the exit of St Devote. The result was a heavily damaged car, too damaged to be repaired for qualifying

Rosberg, Nico (Mercedes Grand Prix) Crash due to driver error level 6 6 pts Crashed on the downhill section after the tunnel.

Rosberg lost control of his Mercedes, pitching the nose of the car into the barriers. The car from then on was uncontrolable.. Rosberg slid down the track, was launched from a speed bump and ended up sliding further up the straight that follows the chicane. Luckily for Rosberg he missed the barriers that seperate the track from the escape road.

Mercedes had their work cut out, but they managed to get the car ready for qualifying.

Red Bull Racing Mouthing off 5 pts Horner accused Ferrari of copying their pitstops

In Spain, Redbull noticed that Ferrari brought in Alonso just after Webber was brought in for new tyres. Redbull Team Principal, Horner, remarked on this and explained that they varied their pitstops and even threw a dummy stop to throw Ferrari off the scent.

It became clear in Spain that in order to beat someone on stops in 2011, you need to come in first rather than second so ultimately it was a poor tactical plan from Ferrari.

Looking toward the Monaco GP, “That is why we have changed our procedures this weekend,” he said. “I don’t know if mechanics were putting their hands in their pockets at the wrong time, or it was someone picking a tyre up. But anyway, we have changed our procedures this weekend to be less transparent.”
