SauberBoth cars disqualified due to technical infringement.
Both Saubers were disqualified from the race eliminating a double points finish due to a technical infringement with the rear wing.

A section from the FIA Technical Report reads:

‘Except for the uppermost rear wing element of car numbers 16 and 17 (see previous technical report), all car weights and the items checked were found to be in conformity with the 2011 FIA Formula One Technical Regulations.’

The Sauber team decided to appeal against the exclusion but later retracted this after realizing their mistake.

Alguersuari, Jaime (Scuderia Toro Rosso) Hit another driver(s) level 1 1 pts Collided with the back of Schumacher’s right rear tyre.

Alguersuari got in the wrong place and collided with the back of Schumacher’s right read tyre slicing it. Alguersuari describes “I got a good start, moving up to about tenth or 11th place I think. Then, coming into Turn 2, Michael cut the corner as he was having a go around the outside, while I was on the inside. The result was that he touched my front wing and I had to come in to change it. He could not have avoided doing it, as I was already in the middle of the corner.”

Schumacher, Michael (Mercedes Grand Prix) PunctureDamaging chassis by driver error 8 pts Unintentionally collided with Alguersuari’s front wing, slicing his tyre.

Schumacher blamed Alguersuari for the incident that saw his tyre sliced and disintegrate on the remained of the lap. Schumacher pitted at the end of the lap but the damage to the car’s floor was enough to make the car undrivable. Schumacher retired on Lap 19 as a result.

Button, Jenson (McLaren) Drive through penalty 5 pts Fighting with Massa, Button was forced to use the run off and received a drive through penalty.

In the first major driver battle of 2011, both Massa and Button had been trading dummies and DRS boosts for quite a few laps. Exiting the back straight Button had managed to get along side Massa but Massa did not feel inclined to allow the room for the Englishman to pass. As a result Button took to the run off and gained the advantage. The stewards decided that was not allowed and Button received a drive through penalty. Button took the penalty on lap 18.

Glock, Timo (Virgin Racing) Wheel loose 5 pts Virgin carried out mid race repair to the car of Glock after wheel vibration caused issues.

During a pitstop, the left front wheel was loose. Glock was forced to drive a lap slowly and return to the pits. Virgin repaired the car and sent Glock back out on the track to finish last 9 laps down with the car still vibrating from issues at the front.

Barrichello, Rubens (Williams) Hit another driver(s) level 3Crash due to driver error level 3 6 pts On lap 22, catching Rosberg, Barrichello collided with the German driver putting himself into a spin.

Barrichello complained that Rosberg had braked earlier for the corner forcing Barrichello to make for the side of the Mercedes. The race stewards saw that this was an avoidable accident and gave Barrichello a drive through penalty for the pleasure. Rosberg retired as a result of the accident.

On ending his last flying lap, Sutil ran wide on the last corner. The kerbs sponsored a spin down the main straight managing a 360 degree spin in a plume of blue smoke. Lap ruined!

At the start of Q3 Massa left the pits forgetting the fact that cold tyres could mean a spin. After spinning in turn one, he was up to date on this for the 2011 season. He was able to continue.

As the 3rd driver of Team Lotus, Chandhok had the pleasure of taking our the new 2011 Lotus. No sooner had he passed turn three, he lost control and hit the wall.

 
Sauber Aerodynamic failure 10 pts Engine cover failed to take the stress of racing.

In Friday practice, Kobayashi’s engine cover partially detached itself leading the team to rethink which cover it was to us in the race.
