Alesi had a huge accident in Saturday morning practice as he avoided the Arrows of Pedro de la Rosa in turn one. Alesi needed hospital treatment after the incident and was non too pleased with the Spaniard. “He did three things wrong. First he was going slowly, second he was on the line and third he lifted off. That’s a very long corner and I had no chance to brake.”

Diniz span out of the race on lap nineteen after he lost concentration, having just allowed his team mate, Jean Alesi past. “”I made a good start and ran ahead of Jean for the first nineteen laps but then Mr Sauber told me to let him by. I did this at the chicane at the top of the hill, but I was upset and lost my concentration and spun under braking. The car was over steering in any case and I let myself get caught out.”

With a badly handling car suffering from under steer Irvine, who was trying to hold off Coulthard, slid off the track with fourteen laps left to run. Eddie rejoined the track having lost four seconds and his position to Coulthard. “I managed to keep ahead of DC at our second refuelling stop when we came in after which I pushed like mad because I did not want him on my tail for the last twenty or so laps. The tyres felt good for two or three laps but then they went off in a big way. I was struggling with the front and rear of the car. It was jumping around too much and we were only hanging on by the skin of our teeth.”

After Hakkinen’s tyre failure at Hockenheim Bridgestone issued an official communique implying that McLaren were guilty of operational errors. Ron Dennis was hopping mad. It was rumoured that McLaren had not been inflating the tyres up to the recommended pressure in an attempt to gain grip. “There was no failure to the tyre consistent with incorrect or fault construction and there was no structural failure on the McLaren car.” The rest of the statement implied that low pressure; a blister or a cut in the tyre had caused the failure. Ron Dennis reposted. “Our cars are heavily instrumented so we can absolutely determine whether there was or was not a failure on the car. There was no structural failure at all with Mika or David’s car.” “As far as tyre [pressures were concerned the only data we had was the starting pressures and those fell within the operational parameters laid down.” He went on to say that Bridgestone were out of line putting a statement into circulation that was so black and white when the cause was undetermined.
