Who? What Points Action Lap
Misc
Villeneuve, Jacques (Williams) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Jacques under-steered off the track at Estoril corner in qualifying. The left hand side of his Williams was ripped off as he plunged into the tyre barriers at 135 mph. As David Coulthard arrived on the scene he had to take to the grass to avoid the accident. The track was covered in loose tyres (from the barrier) and the session was red flagged. Villeneuve had injured his back in the accident and as result had to wear a back brace during the race.

Ferrari Breach of technical regulations<br />
1 pts In qualifying there was a dimensional irregularity detected in the deflectors inside the front wheels on Irvine’s car. (They turned out to be 1.4 cm higher than allowed.) His times were disqualified and he had to start the race from 22nd and last on the grid. It later transpired that Williams had tipped the race stewards off to the illegal barge boards on the Ferrari’s.

Verstappen, Jos (Footwork) Crash due to technical failure level 1 1 pts On lap eleven Jos planted his Footwork into the gravel at the fast Estoril bend. “From the start I felt that there was something wrong. I came into the fast left hand corner, turned in and the car just wanted to go straight on.” Subsequent investigation showed that the front right steering arm had pulled out of it’s suspension upright, causing the loss of control.

Frentzen, Heinz-Harald (Sauber) Spin out of session / race 4 pts Frentzen spun off into retirement on lap fifty seven with a throttle problem.

Benetton Dunce 1 pts The Benetton team was fined $10000 for allowing the members of its pit crew to stand in an unauthorised place in the pit lane during the race.
