Verstappen’s team sent him back out after he came into the pits to investigate a sticking throttle. He had a huge shunt a lap later at Stavelot. The car was wrecked and the tyres from the barrier strewn across the track. The appearance of the Mercedes Benz safety car was a formality. The cause of the accident was later found to be a broken front axle stub.

After Verstappen’s accident the safety car came out. Villeneuve missed his pit stop. Hill was entering the pit lane when the team radioed him not to come in. He had to go though the mini chicane to rejoin the track. The mistake cost Hill dearly.

A problem with the refuelling rig during Pedro Lamy’s second pit-stop saw the Portuguese driver “short filled.” He needed a “slash and dash” six laps from the end and because of this lost a points scoring place.

In the scramble down to the first corner Barrichello had made contact with Frentzen and Herbert’s cars. Rubens had to pit at the end of the first lap to have a bent track rod replaced before he resumed at the tail of the field.
