Misc
Schumacher, Michael (Ferrari) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts The then double world champion totalled his Ferrari in practice at the off camber, left hand corner, Pouhon. He lost the rear of his Ferrari and spun backwards into the tyre barriers at 100 mph. He was visibly shaken after the huge impact.

Frentzen, Heinz-Harald (Sauber) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Frentzen and Herbert collided at La Source hairpin jostling for position with Barrichello just after the start. Both Saubers were eliminated on the spot to the anger of Peter Sauber. Oliver Panis was caught up in the accident too. He was also out at the first corner as a result.

Herbert, Johnny (Sauber) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Frentzen and Herbert collided at La Source hairpin jostling for position with Barrichello just after the start. Both Saubers were eliminated on the spot to the anger of Peter Sauber. Oliver Panis was caught up in the accident too. He was also out at the first corner as a result.

Panis, Olivier (Ligier) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Retired just after the start when he became mixed up in an accident between Frentzen and Herbert.

Diniz, Pedro (Ligier) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Diniz’s Ligier sustained slight damage to its nose box, as he scraped past the first corner incident between Barrichello, Panis, Herbert and Frentzen.

Verstappen, Jos (Footwork) Crash due to technical failure level 1 1 pts Verstappen’s team sent him back out after he came into the pits to investigate a sticking throttle. He had a huge shunt a lap later at Stavelot. The car was wrecked and the tyres from the barrier strewn across the track. The appearance of the Mercedes Benz safety car was a formality. The cause of the accident was later found to be a broken front axle stub.

Williams Dunce 1 pts After Verstappen’s accident the safety car came out. Villeneuve missed his pit stop. Hill was entering the pit lane when the team radioed him not to come in. He had to go though the mini chicane to rejoin the track. The mistake cost Hill dearly.

Berger, Gerhard (Benetton) Spin out of session / race 4 pts Berger spun trying to pass Irvine at the Bus stop on lap eighteen, dropping him to fourteenth. This was the trigger for one of the best come back drives of the season.

Minardi Dunce 1 pts A problem with the refuelling rig during Pedro Lamy’s second pit-stop saw the Portuguese driver “short filled.” He needed a “slash and dash” six laps from the end and because of this lost a points scoring place.

Race
Barrichello, Rubens (Jordan) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts In the scramble down to the first corner Barrichello had made contact with Frentzen and Herbert’s cars. Rubens had to pit at the end of the first lap to have a bent track rod replaced before he resumed at the tail of the field.
