On Saturday morning Schumacher took the front wheel off his Benetton after he clipped the kerbs at Varante Alta, sending the Benetton careering into the retaining wall. “There was no danger at all. I was very slow going against the wall and just ripped off the tyre, which bounced away.”

Herbert span twice on the opening laps in the damp conditions. One was a double 360-degree spin… good work. The spin on lap seven at Tamburello flat spotted his tyres and when he came into pit on lap nine to change them he was waved past his pit box. This was because Benetton wanted to pit Schumacher who wanted dry weather tyres.

After changing to slicks on the drying track Schumacher hit a puddle on his out lap on the cold tyres. He lost control, smashing into the tyre barriers at Piratella before coming to a rest in the gravel trap.

Irvine, Eddie (Jordan)

When Irvine made his first stop for tyres on lap eight he mistakenly pulled into the Ligier pit box rather than the Jordan pit-box. Perhaps it was only Irvine and the other members of the Jordan team who were not amused by the Ulsterman’s error.

Berger was leading when he pitted on lap twenty-two. In making his getaway he stalled the car, forcing him to relinquish the lead to Hill. “During the warm up I had been worried about the feel of the hand clutch and the engine had just stalled when I was in for the second time” the Austrian commented.

At his second re-fuelling stop on lap forty eight Mansell had his nose box replaced as marshal had noticed that his front wing endplates were working loose. As he accelerated out of the pits he was wrong footed by a Forti coming into the Tamburello chicane. He turned into the apex very late. This would have all been well and good if Irvine had not been making a dive up the inside. Irvine’s Jordan lost it’s nose box in the incident and had to pit and Mansell had to do a quick tour back to the pits to have his punctured left-rear tyre replaced.
