From this race…
Hakkinen, Mika
As Hakkinen approached the 110-mph corner that leads on to the Brabham straight in Friday qualifying his McLaren’s left-rear tyre suffered an immediate deflation due to a puncture caused by debris on the track surface. The McLaren MP4/10 spun violently over the high kerb and was launched into the air and slammed into the single row of tyres that were in front of a concrete barrier. Hakkinen’s life was saved by the immediate intervention of the Marshals. His head was held straight to stop him from chocking on his own blood and a tracheotomy was performed at the trackside prevented brain damage through loss of oxygen. Hakkinen had sustained a fractured skull but he posted a full recovery. Obviously he took no further part in the race meeting.

When Coulthard came into the pit lane for his first pit-stop on lap twenty he crashed into the wall that marked the outside of the pit lane, terminally damaging his left-front suspension: he had to retire. He offered the following explanation, “What happen was that I slowed for the pits sufficiently, but when I came down into second gear the engine suddenly picked up and drove me forward. I should have dipped the clutch but I was so surprised that I hit the brakes and slid into the wall. I am very disappointed but not embarrassed; I was caught out by something that has been a problem in the pit lane all year.” Yeah right!

Schumacher exited the pit-lane after his first stop just behind Alesi. Schumacher could not allow his new tyre advantage to slip him by and he needed to pass Alesi quickly. On lap twenty-three Schumacher drew up alongside Alesi on the Brabham straight. There was not way Alesi was going to give way and he swung his Ferrari into Schumacher’s Benetton. The Ferrari’s left front tyre hooked inside the Benetton’s left rear tyre. The Ferrari’s front wings were shredded and although Alesi kept ahead both were off the track a few meters later. Alesi pitted for a new nose cone. Schumacher later pitted to have his tyres investigated but had to retire on lap twenty-six due to the suspension damage that his Benetton had sustained. Schumacher was not happy, “It was a very unnecessary action that Alesi took because I was clearly fast than him. I don’t understand what was going on in his brain. Was it switched off? He’d better keep out of my way at the Benetton Party tonight because this wasn’t the way I want to finish my season. Ok the Williams were quick but I would have been happy to finish the season second here.”

Blundell held up Frentzen, who was about the lap the Englishman, for two laps. Sauber were not amused but all the frustration did nothing as Frentzen was out a few laps later.

Brundle was catching his former Ligier team-mate, Mark Blundell at a considerable rate of knots. Brundle hit the rear of Blundell’s McLaren under barking for the hairpin at the end of the Brabham straight. Blundell continued with a knackered under tray, (several of its supports had been broken.) Brundle spun, stalled his engine and went no further.
