In the build up the Spanish Grand Prix Benetton boss, Flavio Briatore was openly venomous about the manner in which the FIA had implemented the changes to the rules in the wake of Senna’s death. In a long letter to Mosley he accused the FIA of making ill-judged, snap decisions. He was not happy that his drivers would have to take part in the Spanish race in cars that had not been fully tested. Several teams were facing structural failures due to the modifications they were being forced to implement. Pedro Lamy had suffered a huge testing accident at Silverstone due to a wing mounting failure, caused by the rule changes pushing components out of the spectrum in which they had been designed to operate. Mosley rejected the contention and told teams they could miss one race without incurring a fine if they were worried about the engineering of their cars. The race officials demanded evidence that the B194s were safe to race.

Montermini had a massive accident at the end of the Friday’s free practice session. He lost control of his car in the fast right hand corner that leads no to the start finish straight. The car snapped away from him and torpedoed into the concrete barrier on the outside of the track, then it spun back on to the track. The front end was torn off the Simtek and the accident looked sizable. Collectively Formula one held it’s breath but Montermini escaped with superficial injuries. He was air lifted hospital for cautionary x-rays. This accident was another serious blow for Nick Writh’s tiny Simtek team after the death of Ratzenberger even though his driver had escaped with a cracked heals and gash to the head.

On returning to formula One after his three-race ban, Irvine almost lost a points scoring place. Whilst running in fourth place he clipped the temporary tyre chicane and he needed to make an unscheduled pit stop in order to have his nose box replaced. He eventually finished sixth, the last point scoring position.

Verstappen crashed out of the race heavily on lap twenty-six. As he arrived at the ess bend before the pits he found himself ploughing straight on into the gravel trap. He knew that his Benetton’s nose box was damaged and he went into the pit to have it changed. Unfortunately he span out into the gravel tarp on the first right hand corner after the pits; just a few laps after rejoining the track.

Alesi made a huge cock-up on lap forty-two. He spun in the tight ess bends that lead on to the start finish straight. In his efforts to perform a “spin turn” to get him facing in the correct direction he collected the Jordan of Ruben Barrichello. The front suspension on both cars was terminally damaged and both retired on the spot. Rubens was mortified; “He just didn’t measure the distance between us. I am so disappointed because today I really believed I could have finished on the podium.”
