At the Canadian grand prix the FIA introduced two new rules to slow the cars further. The first was an increase in the minimum weight and the second was to remove the “ram effect” of the airflow into the engine. Most teams did this by cutting slots in the back of the air box so that they could keep the structure to display sponsorship. Ferrari cut two small slats in either side of the air box. The general consensus was that they were still getting some “ram effect” and thus the modifications were not in the spirit of the rules. Due to complaints form team managers Ferrari were forced to add a slot at the back of the air box before Saturday. It was suspicious that the Saturday times did not match the Friday times, i.e. they were considerably slower!

Coulthard got the jump on Hill at the start and for nine laps he had engaged hill in a wheel to wheel battle until he was forced to defer to his more senior team mate by Patrick Head. Hill later admitted that he had been frustrated by the incident; “I was a little cheesed off actually because I knew I could go quicker but I’m not complaining, because even if I’d been able to get ahead earlier than I did I don’t think I would have been able to catch Schumacher.”

Zanardi overtook Lehto’s Benetton at the chicane courtesy of jumping the corner. He was judged to have gained an advantage by jumping the chicane and he was given a ten second stop-go penalty.

Irvine spun off the track and into retirement on lap forty-one. He did this in the ess bend that leads on to the start finish straight. He lost control and span into the concrete retaining wall as he tried to lap Zanardi’s Lotus. “I was pushing too hard to get a run on him on the straight and I guess I must have been too close as I lost down force, because suddenly the backend was gone.”

Katayama, Ukyo (Tyrrell)

Katayama was the first of the Tyrrell drivers to spin out of the race. Katayama spun and retired from the race on lap fort-two. During an earlier spin he was actually travelling down the track in the reverse direction and he was lucky that he did not collide with another car. A brake duct was damaged in the first spin and he brakes began to overheat and this caused his send spin and subsequent retirement from the race.

Comas came into the pits to retire on lap fort-six. He had already served two stop-go penalties from pit lane speeding due to a malfunctioning pit lane speed limiter. On the second and final occasion he stormed away from the car rather than continuing. The “official” reason given by the team for his retirement was a malfunctioning clutch. Comas describe the events as “A shit end to a shit weekend.” He just frankly had had enough.

Fittipaldi was initially accredited with sixth place until it was noticed in post-race scrutineering that his Larrousse was fractionally below the minimum weight of 515kg. He was disqualified from the results and Lehto inherited sixth place from the unfortunate Brazilian.

Barrichello was suffering with gearbox problems that had led to him going into the pits on lap fifty-two. At the hairpin of the last lap he spun partly due to these problems and lost what would have eventually been sixth place to Lehto.
