The race started on a wet track and the hapless Italian driver spun his Minardi into the gravel trap under braking at the second corner of the race. The Italian car was well and truly stuck in the gravel and Martini was out. In fact, the car was so well bedded that a course car was drafted to assist in its removal.

Berger, Gerhard (McLaren) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Berger accidentally put his McLaren into first gear in Friday free practice. This error broke first gear and he was stuck in the pits for fort-five minutes while the repairs were effected.

 
Senna, Ayrton (McLaren) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Senna made an un-characteristic error in the Friday’s qualifying session. He spoilt his best lap on qualifying rubber with a fluffed gear change. “I missed fifth gear coming out of the fastest chicane and by mistake I stuck it into third, which over revved the engine.” The engine was replace in time for Saturday qualifying.

 
Alliot, Phillippe (Ligier) Spin out of session / race 4 pts In Friday qualifying Alliot spun his race car out on the track whilst setting it up using C compound race tyres. He had to abandon his race car out of the track and dash back to the pits to take the spare car. “That meant I had to take the untried spare, throw on my qualifiers and hope for the best” shrugged the Frenchman.

 
Bernard, Eric (Larrousse) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts After surviving a number on minor dramas with his Larrousse on the Friday, Bernard had a massive accident in the wet, Saturday morning practice session. The session had to be red flagged after he lost control of his car at one of the chicanes. “I was just returning to the pits when I was caught unprepared by a large puddle of water, “ he confessed. “The visibility was awful, the car spanned sideways and the front end hit the wall. The chassis will have to go back to Lola for repair it is so badly damaged.”

 
Grouillard, Olivier (Fondmetal) Spin out of session / race 4 pts During Saturday’s wet qualifying session Grouillard survived a relatively harmless spin into the gravel.

 
Berger, Gerhard (McLaren) Jump start 7 pts As the lights turned green to start the race Berger’s McLaren was still rolling forward. Quite correctly he was adjudged to have jumped the start even though he made a visible effort to back off in an effort to erase any advantage he may have gained. On lap five the race Stewards informed the McLaren team of Berger’s punishment, a one minute time penalty. On lap six Berger pitted early for slicks, as he had nothing to loose.

Alboreto, Michele (Footwork) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Both Pirro and Alboreto were eliminated from the race half way around the twelfth lap. the had contrived to entangled the Dallara and the Footwork and the cars were going nowhere. Both of the Italians were out of the race.

Alesi, Jean (Tyrrell) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts After a storming start Alesi was running in fifth place when an altercation with the rear end of de Cesaris’s Dallara saw the French man diving into the pits to have his Tyrrells damaged nose box replaced. This dropped him to eleventh place.

 
Boutsen, Thierry (Williams) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts On lap twenty Prost was coming up to Larini’s Ligier. He did not want to come up to him in the middle of the next left hander so he backed off slightly. Boutsen saw the slowing Ferrari in front and it was like waving a red flag at a bull. He dived up the inside of the Ferrari, off the dry racing line on to the wet. The Williams snapped away immediately dumping the Belgian to barriers and retirement. Unfortunately for Larini the wayward Williams collected his Ligier and he was eliminated from the race too. “You can rely on the fact that I will never, ever make that sort of mistake again,” professed the embarrassed Boutsen.

 
Larini, Nicola (Ligier) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts On lap twenty Prost was coming up to Larini’s Ligier. He did not want to approach the Ligier in the middle of the next left hander so he backed off slightly. Boutsen saw the slowing Ferrari in front and it was like waving a red flag at a bull. He dived up the inside of the Ferrari, off the dry racing line on to the wet. The Williams snapped away immediately dumping the Belgian to barriers and retirement. Unfortunately for Larini the wayward Williams collected his Ligier and he was eliminated from the race too. “You can rely on the fact that I will never, ever make that sort of mistake again,” professed the embarrassed Boutsen.

 
Nannini, Alessandro (Benetton) Spin out of session / race 4 pts Nannini was leading the race when he pitted for slick tyres on lap fifteen. The pit stop was a painful 12.9 seconds and he rejoined the race well down the order. To compound his woes further he hit a groundhog on his out lap, puncturing one of the Benetton’s front tyres and damaging its front wing. He had to pit again for repairs dropping him to twenty- first place. Then finally he hit a puddle of water off the racing line and spun his Benetton firmly into the tyre barrier down an escape road midway around the track. He was out of the race on lap twenty-two.

 
Alesi, Jean (Tyrrell) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Alesi was recovering from a pit stop to replace his Tyrrell’s nose box when on lap twenty-seven he made a decisive move on Donnelly’s Lotus going into the old pits hair pin. As he got off the dry line he hit standing water and lost control of his Tyrrell and aquaplaned down the escape road where Nannini had crashed his Benetton earlier in the race. The organisers had no provision for craning away abandoned cars at that point on the track and the wayward Tyrrell smashed into the abandoned Benetton. The gearbox of the 019 Tyrrell struck the Benetton in the centre of it’s TUB, writing it off totally. Alesi walked away uninjured.

 
Foitek, Gregor (Onyx) Engine problem 5 pts On lap fifty-four Foitek’s race came to a premature end. A fluffed gear change caused him to over rev his Monteverdi’s engine, in spectacular fashion, terminally damaging it.

 
Grouillard, Olivier (Fondmetal) Unsportsman like driving 3 pts In the latter stages of the race Grouillard was holding up a great number of the midfield runners, as he was reluctant to be lapped. This made it problematic for the leaders too when they encountered the train of slower cars.
