In the very first corner of the 1995 season Katayama’s Tyrrell made slight contact with Olivier Panis’s Ligier. This tipped the Frenchman’s Ligier into a spin from which he was unable to recover. He was stuck in the gravel and had to retire. Katayama continued.

The safety car was deployed on lap twenty-nine on account of standing water on the Eau Rogue complex. Unfortunately for Katayama, he spun out of the race at Malmedy, literally seconds before the safety car came out on to the circuit.

At the start of the race Katayama in his Tyrrell, tangled with Badoer’s Minardi. The Japanese drivers car was launched into the air over Badoer’s right-rear wheel, barrel rolling several times before coming to a rest in the middle of the track lying upside down on it’s roll hoop. Luckily no one was seriously injured. This combined with Heinz-Harald Frentzen spinning his Sauber down the road forced the race organisers to red flag the race. Katayama was taken to hospital in Lisbon and kept in overnight for observations. The only injury he sustained was a strained neck!

Katayama had fought his way up to fifth place from fourteenth on the grid by lap fifty-four before he span his Tyrrell at the Adelaide hairpin. He did not catch the clutch in time and the Yamaha engine stalled and Katayama was out of the race.

Katayama was the first of the Tyrrell drivers to spin out of the race. Katayama spun and retired from the race on lap fort-two. During an earlier spin he was actually travelling down the track in the reverse direction and he was lucky that he did not collide with another car. A brake duct was damaged in the first spin and he brakes began to overheat and this caused his send spin and subsequent retirement from the race.

Going into the first turn of the race Katayama attempted to run around the outside of
Irvine’s Jordan, simultaneously Barrichello made a dive down the inside of his team mate, Irvine. The cars were three abreast into the first corner and a collision was inevitable. All three cars could have finished in the points but as they collected each other and slid into the gravel trap their race was run, there and then.

Katayama crashed out of the race on lap forty-six. Like his team mate had done, six lap previously Katayama suffered a failure of the Tyrrell’s new specification carbon brake disks. Katayama spun heavily into the tyre barriers at Curva Grande but he escaped without injury.

During the downpour on lap three Katayama lost control of his Tyrrell and slammed into the barriers. He was out of the race and was fortunate that the only injury he sustained was a bruised leg.

Just as Suzuki crashed on the start finish straight in the monsoon conditions, his fellow countryman, Katayama span in sympathy on the opposite side of the track. He was out of the race too, his Tyrrell was only slightly damaged but its engine had stalled.

In Friday’s qualifying session Katayama slammed his Tyrrell into the wall. He had to borrow de Cesaris’s car to attempt to qualify. What was worse was that de Cesaris had damaged the under tray on his Tyrrell riding the kerbs and Katayama had to wait while the team effected the necessary repairs.

In the early stages of the race Katayama ran wide over a kerb. He collected debris in his car’s side pods and he pitted at the end of lap eight to have it removed. He resumed at the tail of the field but the trip over the kerb had ruptured the car’s sump and the Japanese driver had a terminal oil leak. He got as far as lap ten before he had to retire his car in flames.

Katayama spun his low on grip Tyrrell in Saturday’s qualifying session after his first run and set of qualifying tyres had be ruined when his team mate, de Cesaris spun in front of him. The trip over the grass ruined his second and final set of qualifying tyres and filled the side pods with debris that caused the Tyrrells engine to over heat.

The long-term effects of Katayama’s first lap contact with Lamy’s Lotus brought the Japanese driver’s race to a halt on lap twelve. Coming into the fast kink that leads on to the back straight a steering arm failed and Katayama became a passenger as the Tyrrell under steered off into the concrete retaining wall.

A thirty-second pit stop due to a sticking wheel nut had put Gachot down the order. He was carving his way back through the field when he came up to his Venturi team mate, Katayama on lap forty. There was a misunderstanding between the two drivers coming into the Casio chicane tat resulted in heavy contact between the two cars. Gachot was out of the race and Katayama was sent scuttling into the pits. . Katayama was sent back out even though his gearbox was now leaking over the track: he eventually finished a distant eleventh.
