Sato, Takuma Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Ramming Fisichella on lap three.

Suddenly on lap three, the super aggressive, Japanese rookie, Takuma Sato was far too late on the brakes and rammed his teammate, Giancarlo Fisichella from behind. (7 points.) Sato’s Jordan lost it’s nose cone and Fisichella’s its rear wing. Both limped back to the pits. Ironically Fisichella arrived first but was served second, as a rear wing replacement is time consuming and it would be better to get Sato back into the race as soon as possible. Giancarlo got out of his Jordan and presumed his race was run but the team fitted a new rear wing and tyres before they sent him on his way. (Fisichella rejoined after loosing over two laps.) Both drivers finished the race but a valuable, points scoring opportunity had been squandered.
“I am really sorry about what happened with Giancarlo,” said Takuma. “I apologise very much, it shouldn’t have happened. I saw a Toyota pushing him going into the first corner and then into turn 2 they were side by side with me right behind them. Unfortunately I moved across and went into the back of Giancarlo. I damaged my steering and front wing in the accident but the mechanics were able to change the wing in the pit stop and I coped with the steering problem. Obviously I am very happy to have finished the race in the top ten, but this is marred by the fact that I damaged my teammate’s chances of scoring points. I apologise to him immediately after the race and he took it extremely well which I think says a lot about his good character.”

Sato, Takuma Pit lane blunder 5 pts Exiting the pitlane though the red light in Friday Free Practice.

Sato was set to lose his best qualifying time as punishment for exiting the pit lane in Friday morning’s opening session under a red light. The FIA Stewards issued the penalty, stating that exiting the pit lane when the exit lights are red is contrary to Article 113 of the 2002 FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations. This will mean that Sato’s second best time would determine his place on the grid for the start of the race.

The second Saturday practice session was unremarkable but Sato found time in the 45-minute session for his expected smash. He lost control of his EJ12, slid off the track and into the gravel, ripping the front wing off the car. Eddie Jordan has followed Dave Richard’s lead and had a severe round of sackings. Sato would have to keep his nose cleaner to avoid the same fate but then again, no Sato no Honda! Yellow flags ensued and Sato’s session was over.

Sato, Takuma Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Crashing in the tunnel, trying to let Fisichella past, 5 points for style and 4 for speed.

On lap nineteen, Frentzen overtook Mika Salo for eighth place. Fisichella was following closely and had to back off and as a result he fell behind his teammate Takuma Sato. Sato was ordered by Jordan to let Fisichella through and on lap twenty-three Sato pulled off the racing line through the tunnel to allow his teammate past. Takuma had failed to consider the dusty surface off the swept racing line and he lost control of his Jordan. The car spun into the barriers and slid out of the tunnel, all the way down to the chicane where it met the barriers as Fisichella weaved madly in avoidance. Sato escaped the car uninjured, which was fortunate, since he had suffered soft tissue damage to his right thigh following a big accident at the previous Grand Prix.

“It was an exciting race and I made a really good start, overtaking a couple of cars at the first corner and then I was immediately behind Giancarlo. I was able to overtake him as he seemed to get held up by something, maybe passing other cars,” Sato explained. “But at the time Giancarlo was slightly quicker than me and because I was ahead of him, the team asked me to let him through. I was trying to let him go past, but unfortunately it was at the exit of the tunnel and while I was trying to make space for him, I picked up dust, slid and lost control of the car. It is a big disappointment but has been good experience for me and I would like to congratulate Giancarlo for scoring points. Brilliant”
