Unlike the other accidents on the downhill section this weekend, Perez was less lucky in that he impacted on the barriers that separate the escape lane and the straight after the chicane. Perez, who was performing well in the Sauber, slid out of control, impacting the barriers at significant speed coming to a rest in less than 2 meters. It was clear that Perez, motionless in the cockpit, had been knocked out by the impact. The session was rightly red flagged which left just 2 and a half minutes on the clock. This effectively ended qualifying with most other drivers unable to improve their times. Perez was essentially unhurt but was taken to hospital where he spent a number of nights recovering from the concussion. |
