Patrese, Riccardo (Williams) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts After a nightmare of a pit stop that dropped Patrese to fourth place set off in resolute style to catch Berger, Senna and Mansell. Patrese soon caught up to Berger but the Austrian was proving difficult to overtake, as he was legitimately defending his line. The main straight was the only place where Riccardo would have enough of a slipstream to get past Berger. On lap forty-two Patrese was tucked up behind Berger as the came on to the start/finish straight, little did Patrese know that Berger would be pulling into the pits. Berger moved to the right hand side of the track to take the line into the pit entrance and Patrese followed him over. Berger lifted off the throttle which, due to the amount of drag generated by Formula One cars amounted to braking. Patrese was caught out and he tried to slip past Berger but the Williams’s left front wheel caught the McLaren’s right rear. The front of the Williams was launched into the air; the tail of the car was now several feet into the air. The car continued to roll backwards until it reached the point of no return, flying under the bridge with a tiny amount of clearance. The Williams had completed a full turn when its right hand side came crashing down into the pit wall. Patrese walked away form the massive accident. He accepted that Berger had had no malicious intent and the race stewards put the cause of the accident down to a misunderstanding. Mansell was furious: “I was being very patient in the race trying to save my tyres for a hard push in the closing stages.” He was not happy that Patrese had tried to race him. Patrese, Riccardo (Williams) Spin out of session / race 4 pts Patrese had a sizable accident in Friday’s free practice that would leave him with a stiff neck and shoulders. Oil was all over the track and with no marshal on hand to warn of the danger, Patrese lost control of his FW14 on the oil and slammed into the barrier backward, braking the right-rear wheel and suspension. The session was red flagged and commenced some forty minutes later.

Patrese was furious and blamed Berger for the incident but the replays clearly showed that Berger legitimately had the inside line and he should be the one who to be aggrieved.

1991 – Italian Grand Prix
Misc
Patrese, Riccardo (Williams) Spin out of session / race 4 pts Patrese was driving a brilliant race and on lap twenty-eight an audacious manoeuvre saw his slip past Senna under braking for the first chicane to take the lead. Patrese was down to third only a few laps later after he spun when his Williams’s automatic gearbox missed a gear. “There was a momentary hesitation in the gearbox. I couldn’t find third when I was braking for the corner but then it went into third as I was turning in. That locked the rear wheels and I was gone I got going again but a lap later the clutch broke.” The speed trap at the corner showed that he had in fact arrived at the corner 5 kmph fast than at any other point in the race and the ensuing slide onto the kerb probably did little for the level of grip afforded to the FW14.

He continued for another nine laps but the damage that his William’s diffuser had sustained in the incident had left him very short on down force and he pulled into the pits to retire at the end of twenty-seven.
