In Friday free Practice Zonta lost control of his BAR at 170 mph in the uphill corner Ferradura. Zonta sustained a broken leg in the accident that saw and was sidelined for several races. His left front foot was slashed open and impregnated with fragments of carbon fibre due to a front suspension member piercing the monocoque. Professor Sid Watkins, the FIA medical delegate was of the opinion that Zonta had been lucky to survive the accident, “I think the cockpit and neck protection saved his life and certainly the very least serous head injury. We have no numbers for the forces involved in the impact but we will have them available later in the year.”

On his return to racing, following his accident in Brazil, Zonta crashed out of the race on third lap. He slithered into the retaining wall on the outside of the ess bend that led on to the start/finish straight. The damage that the BAR01 sustained was significant, depositing oil at that part of the track.

Zonta span off the track and into the gravel during qualifying, the resulting waved yellow flags ruined his team mate’s (Villeneuve) last qualifying run.

Like his team mate, Jacques Villeneuve Zonta had a huge accident in Eau Rogue in qualifying. Unlike Villeneuve Zonta was not sure why he lost control, but like his team mate he was uninjured.

At the start of the race Zonta stalled his engine ion the grid. He was able to get going again but he was a lap down.
