Rosset and Katayama collided with each other on lap eighteen at the Old Pits Chicane. Both cars were wrecked and both drivers were out. Katayama blamed Rosset. This was not the view of the FIA who gave Katayama a one race ban, suspended for two races for his part in the incident.

Battling hard with Ukyo Katayama for sixteenth place Rosset failed to see Damon hill in his mirrors on lap twenty one. As a result the Englishman lost a significant amount of time that would allow Villeneuve to leap frog him in the pit-stops.

In Thursday free practice Rosset had been inattentive and when he slid wide Jacques Villeneuve dived up inside the Tyrrell. The two cars locked together and slithered in to the barrier. Villeneuve was fit to be tied and gave the young Brazilian a lecture on the use of rear view mirrors.

After Rosset had written off his race chassis tangling with Villeneuve in Thursday free practice he failed to make the qualifying cut on the Saturday for the second race in succession. He was not helped when he spun in qualifying and in trying to get his Tyrrell pointing in the correct direction he jammed it between a gap in the armaco barriers.

On lap thirty Rosset aquaplaned off the track, pirouetting onto the grass, where his Tyrrell became stuck fast. He was out of the race then and there.

In the Saturday morning practice session Barrichello tangled with Rosset. Both cars were moderately damaged in the incident. Rosset lost valuable set-up time and yet gain he failed to qualify, this time by a huge margin of seven tenths of a second.
