1 pts | After the red lights went out Schumacher Jnr got it all wrong in the chase down to the fourth corner. He was trying to be too ambitious and he put his EJ198 way off the racing line under braking for the first corner. He lost control of the car and spun into the gravel trap, race over. “It was a really bad day for me. I was hoping for so much from the race as I have had a good weekend here. I had a quite good, start but then on turn four I got off line, picked up dirt on my tyres and went off. I am very, very disappointed.” |

5 pts | At the restart of the race, after Wurz’s accident Ralf got way the second time. Into the first corner he got badly out of shape and spun hid Jordan. As the cars scatted to avoid the spinning Jordan Alesi was collected by Trulli’s Prost, the AP01 landing atop of the Sauber. Both were out of the race. Ralf, who was out of the race, blamed the incident on a clutch problem. “On the first start I stalled the engine. At the second start I put the revs higher and that was too much for the clutch. There was a little drive to begin with but at the first corner when I shifted down there was no drive to the rear wheels and no engine braking, so I spun.” The wreckage for the incident was cleared under the safety car. |

He was stuck in the gravel at turn two and was out of the race. “I came into a corner and Diniz was very close behind and trying to overtake. 5 pts | Hitting Barrichello at the start of the race, (11 points) and the subsequent safety car, (4 points.) Ralf Schumacher, who had made a fast getaway, was challenging Barrichello into the first corner. Ralf was travelling way too fast to make the corner on a clear track and piled into the back of the Ferrari, launching his Willaims in to the air. (10 points) “These things happen in racing and it is a shame that Ralf and me finished out of the race immediately,” Barrichello said. “At the start, I tried to defend my position and then I had to brake. I don’t think I did it too early. In fact I think, quite the opposite, I braked later than usual, as I was worried something like this might happen. It was a heavy impact and I reckon Ralf was flat out. I don’t think he would have got round the corner. Meanwhile Ralf was livid over incident. According to Ralf, Rubens didn’t follow the rules correctly as he changed direction more than once. “I had a great start and had already passed Michael and wanted to pass Barrichello, so I tried to dive into the inside but he closed the door. I then went to the outside and he closed again. I made my last attempt going to the inside and he closed the door and braked at the same time. I cannot complain about the braking, as we were going into the first corner, even if I thought it was a bit too early, but he definitely changed direction twice and we are only allowed to do it once,” he said. “I felt like a passenger on an aeroplane and I was really lucky because I ran off in the right area and didn‘t trip around. Charlie Whiting took the right decision by not stopping the race, as he had made it very clear to us that he would not stop a race unless it was for safety reasons and this wasn‘t the case. This accident was a true shame, as my car was very good and we had no problems at all.” The reality was that Ralf made a misjudgement |

4 pts | Spin in qualifying. Ralf Schumacher failed to improve on his best time on his final qualifying run. Like Raikkonen had done previously he rode the kerbs too high and his left rear tyre edged off the kerb and the Willaims was dragged on to the grass, Ralf’s time in tatters. “We can be reasonably happy as we are very close to Ferrari. I failed to improve my time in the last run due to a mistake,” Ralf explained. “Last year I started third here and I had my first victory in F1, so why couldn’t it be the same this year? A good strategy can take you everywhere. Lots can happen in a race but whatever happens tomorrow, we will try to get some points. It is a promising position for tomorrow.” |

1 pts | Ralf?s grass cutting moment that saw him taking to the pits to have new nose cones fitted on two separate occasions. On lap twenty-nine Ralf was being chased down by his teammate, Juan-Pablo Montoya. Coming out of Campsa, Ralf allowed his car to drift too wide over the kerbs as he exited the corner. The resulting buffeting that the car sustained shattered part of it’s front turning-veins and they flew up, landing in the car’s cockpit. If was obvious that Ralf was angry and he threw the carbon fragments out of his cockpit before he pulled into the pits to have the car attended to. Ralf believed that the front wing was broken and it was replaced at the pitstop. After he exited the pits he could that there was handling imbalance in the car. Investigation revealed the missing turning veins and Ralf pitted again on lap forty to take on a new nose cone, one which was set-up to try and correct the Williams’ imbalance. ”It definitely wasn’t my day today. First I made a silly mistake, which I do very seldom and that’s why am so angry about it and in the end we also had a technical problem,” he explained. “In the turn before the pit lane entry I went off and damaged some parts of my car, so I had to pit and that effectively ended my race. We now go back home with some work to do for everybody: Myself as well as BMW, WilliamsF1 and Michelin.” |

|
5 pts | Ralf?s refusal of Michael?s offer to give him a lift back to the pits after his younger bother?s car had failed on the last lap. After a BMW engine failure had put Ralf out of the race on the very last lap. He was left stranded at the trackside as his brother, Michael, was completing his cooling down lap after winning the race. The four-time world champion stopped to give his little brother a lift but Ralf refused. This was probably a smart move if he did not want to look like a lame duck being aided by his superstar brother. |

1 pts | Over the grass in Qualifying 1 Predictably, Ralf Schumacher’s first-foray in Formula One’s new “one-lap” qualifying format ended in tears at the very first corner. Ralf was never famed for his ability to cope under pressure and this “early wobble” hinted of a return to his old “weed whacking” days. Coming into the fast, right – left chicane, the blurry eyed German missed his braking point and slid over the grass at the apex of the corner, loosing valuable time in the process. Obviously flustered, he did his best to make a bad situation worse by locking the brakes into turn three. The resulting 1:27.420 lap time was highly unimpressive and it meant that an embarrassed Ralf would be running fifth in the following days qualifying session. |

1 pts | Spin on lap 11 that forced Trulli to take to the grass in avoidance On lap eleven Ralf Schumacher was pushing hard. He had been on the receiving end of a lot of criticism and or own he had the hammer down. He was fighting Trulli for sixth position but succumbed to the Italian’s pressure and spun under braking into turn one. This would have been great for Trulli had the FW25 not spun into his path, forcing him on to the grass in avoidance. Fortunately, both drivers were able to recover their cars and rejoin the race. |

4 pts | Falling off the track after being overtaken by Alonso, damaging his Williams in the process Alonso?s lap thirty-six pit stop had allowed Ralf Schumacher up into second position, behind his brother, Michael. Following his strop the Spaniard set about hunting the Schumacher bothers, Ralf being the first to receive his attentions. Ralf?s Williams was handling like a dog, its traction out of the slow corner?s was woeful leaving the German in a vulnerable position. Ralf drove as defensively as he was able until he succumbed to Alonso?s pressure on lap forty. Ralf slid wide in turn three and lost a significant amount of what traction he had off the swept racing line. Alonso simple had to drive past the flagging BMW powered car but Ralf did not give up. He tried to hold his line as best he could but he picked up understeer, which resulted in the German skipping over the gravel before rejoining the track. His time loss had been minimal but Schumacher Junior had damaged his FW25?s bodywork, something that would slow him for the balance of the race. “After all the testing we did on this track, we thought we could achieve a better result. But after the struggle that we went through this weekend, we are reasonably happy with fourth and fifth positions,” Ralf said. “When I went off the circuit a part of my bodywork got ripped, which caused my car to oversteer quite a lot. In the last 16 laps I had a hard but fair fight with Cristiano da Matta. All in all this weekend showed that we have a lot of work ahead of us.” |
