He was trying to be too ambitious and he put his EJ198 way off the racing line under braking for the first corner. He lost control of the car and spun into the gravel trap, race over. “It was a really bad day for me. I was hoping for so much from the race as I have had a good weekend here. I had a quite good, start but then on turn four I got off line, picked up dirt on my tyres and went off. I am very, very disappointed.”

Schumacher, Ralf (Jordan) Caused a multiple pile-up level 1 5 pts At the restart of the race, after Wurz’s accident Ralf got way the second time. Into the first corner he got badly out of shape and spun hid Jordan. As the cars scatted to avoid the spinning Jordan Alesi was collected by Trulli’s Prost, the AP01 landing atop of the Sauber. Both were out of the race. Ralf, who was out of the race, blamed the incident on a clutch problem. “On the first start I stalled the engine. At the second start I put the revs higher and that was too much for the clutch. There was a little drive to begin with but at the first corner when I shifted down there was no drive to the rear wheels and no engine braking, so I spun.” The wreckage for the incident was cleared under the safety car.

He was stuck in the gravel at turn two and was out of the race. “I came into a corner and Diniz was very close behind and trying to overtake. I was trying to hold him off but I braked too late and begun to slide on the track which was quite dirty at that point. I could not avoid spinning and going into the gravel.”

Schumacher, Ralf Caused a multiple pile-up level 1 5 pts Hitting Barrichello at the start of the race, (11 points) and the subsequent safety car, (4 points.)

Ralf Schumacher, who had made a fast getaway, was challenging Barrichello into the first corner. Ralf was travelling way too fast to make the corner on a clear track and piled into the back of the Ferrari, launching his Willaims in to the air. (10 points) “These things happen in racing and it is a shame that Ralf and me finished out of the race immediately,” Barrichello said. “At the start, I tried to defend my position and then I had to brake. I don’t think I did it too early. In fact I think, quite the opposite, I braked later than usual, as I was worried something like this might happen. It was a heavy impact and I reckon Ralf was flat out. I don’t think he would have got round the corner. Meanwhile Ralf was livid over incident. According to Ralf, Rubens didn’t follow the rules correctly as he changed direction more than once. “I had a great start and had already passed Michael and wanted to pass Barrichello, so I tried to dive into the inside but he closed the door. I then went to the outside and he closed again. I made my last attempt going to the inside and he closed the door and braked at the same time. I cannot complain about the braking, as we were going into the first corner, even if I thought it was a bit too early, but he definitely changed direction twice and we are only allowed to do it once,” he said. “I felt like a passenger on an aeroplane and I was really lucky because I ran off in the right area and didn‘t trip around. Charlie Whiting took the right decision by not stopping the race, as he had made it very clear to us that he would not stop a race unless it was for safety reasons and this wasn‘t the case. This accident was a true shame, as my car was very good and we had no problems at all.” The reality was that Ralf made a misjudgement

Ralf Schumacher failed to improve on his best time on his final qualifying run. Like Raikkonen had done previously he rode the kerbs too high and his left rear tyre edged off the kerb and the Willaims was dragged on to the grass, Ralf’s time in tatters.

“We can be reasonably happy as we are very close to Ferrari. I failed to improve my time in the last run due to a mistake,” Ralf explained. “Last year I started third here and I had my first victory in F1, so why couldn’t it be the same this year? A good strategy can take you everywhere. Lots can happen in a race but whatever happens tomorrow, we will try to get some points. It is a promising position for tomorrow.”

Misc
Schumacher, Ralf Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Ralf?s grass cutting moment that saw him taking to the pits to have new nose cones fitted on two separate occasions.

On lap twenty-nine Ralf was being chased down by his teammate, Juan-Pablo Montoya. Coming out of Campsa, Ralf allowed his car to drift too wide over the kerbs as he exited the corner. The resulting buffeting that the car sustained shattered part of it’s front turning-veins and they flew up, landing in the car’s cockpit. If was obvious that Ralf was angry and he threw the carbon fragments out of his cockpit before he pulled into the pits to have the car attended to. Ralf believed that the front wing was broken and it was replaced at the pitstop. After he exited the pits he could that there was handling imbalance in the car. Investigation revealed the missing turning veins and Ralf pitted again on lap forty to take on a new nose cone, one which was set-up to try and correct the Williams’ imbalance.

”It definitely wasn’t my day today. First I made a silly mistake, which I do very seldom and that’s why am so angry about it and in the end we also had a technical problem,” he explained. “In the turn before the pit lane entry I went off and damaged some parts of my car, so I had to pit and that effectively ended my race. We now go back home with some work to do for everybody: Myself as well as BMW, WilliamsF1 and Michelin.”

Schumacher, Ralf Deviousness 5 pts Ralf?s refusal of Michael?s offer to give him a lift back to the pits after his younger bother?s car had failed on the last lap.

After a BMW engine failure had put Ralf out of the race on the very last lap. He was left stranded at the trackside as his brother, Michael, was completing his cooling down lap after winning the race. The four-time world champion stopped to give his little brother a lift but Ralf refused. This was probably a smart move if he did not want to look like a lame duck being aided by his superstar brother.

Schumacher, Ralf Dunce 1 pts Ralf?s rubbish new hair colour.

Ralf Schumacher turned up to the 2002 Austrian grand prix with bleached hair. He looked like a prat and he knew it, the rather embarrassed Williams driver admitting it was “the hair-cutter’s mistake and that it would soon be changed.” Ralf seemed keener than usual to wear his team cap all through the weekend.

Ralf tried the spare car as well as his race car during the race warm-up and was able to survive a spin in each.

Schumacher, Ralf Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts 3 points for crossing the pit lane line and 5 for the drive through.

As Ralf Schumacher exited the pitlane after his second stop he was the third driver to run over the white line that demarcated the pit-lane exit. He was called in for a subsequent drive through penalty that dropped him from well down the order.

Schumacher, Ralf Unsportsman like driving 3 pts Cheery wave to Trulli.

Like his teammate, Jenson Button, Jarno Trulli was struggling with his Renault all race, falling backwards through the field. He was so busy going slowly that did not notice Ralf Schumacher trying to lap him. Trulli held Ralf up, balking him significantly. Ralf was not best pleased either, giving Trulli a cheery wave.

Schumacher, Ralf Spin out of session / race 4 pts Across the grass in FFP1.

Ralf Schumacher was the first driver to fall of the dusty track in Friday’s first free practice session. Coming into turn two he locked his brakes and slid across the grass. (The track was still damp in parts after a heavy rain shower early in the morning.)

Ralf was trying hard in Saturday’s first free practice session. This was evident when he slid across the grass at turn six.

Schumacher, Ralf Spin out of session / race 4 pts Across the grass in qualifying.

Ralf’s third run in qualifying was ruined when he lost the back end of his Williams
and understeered off the track. He later admitted to making a slight set-up change
which turned out to be counterproductive.

"I must say thanks to the team for having achieved such a good starting
position. I really did not expect this. We have had a very difficult weekend so
far, going through ups and downs,"
Ralf said. "The car was difficult
to drive and I had an off in my third qualifying run. Throughout qualifying we
tried dramatically different set up changes from the direction we were originally
going and the car improved but it was just not good enough to achieve a better
time in my last run. I have never made so many changes to my car than this during
a qualifying session."

Schumacher, Ralf Spin out of session / race 4 pts Across the grass at Les Combs.

Coming up to the first round of pit stops Ralf Schumacher was pushing hard to
defend his sixth place from the Renault of Jarno Trulli.. Coming into Les Combs
on the eighteenth lap of the race Ralf was too late on the brakes and he slid
off the track on to the grass. He was able to recover his car but he lost the
place to Trulli.

"I can only be reasonably satisfied today as I made a few mistakes.
At the start I was blocked by a slow starting Raikkonen, then I spun and went
into the gravel trap and finally when I restarted after my second pit-stop I pushed
the wrong button on the steering wheel by mistake,"
Ralf explained. "In
the end I have scored two points which are very valuable to the team in the fight
for the second place in the Constructors’ World Championship"

Schumacher, Ralf Unsportsman like driving 3 pts Chicane cutting on lap one.

Montoya was slow away from pole position. Sensing the presence of fast starters,
Ralf Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello, Montoya aggressively chopped across his
teammate. Ralf was in determined mood and was able to pull alongside the Colombian
into the braking area for the first chicane. Montoya braked as late as he could
and Ralf tried to brake even later. The German had been too optimistic and he
understeered across the apex of the chicane, passing Montoya in the process.

The FIA took note and secretly instructed Williams to get their drivers to
change position rather than issue Ralf with a penalty for gaining an unfair advantage.
On lap five, Schumacher obligingly moved over but his engine blew and he was out
of the race.

"It was a very odd start Juan had some problems to get away so I took
advantage at the first chicane. The team was called by the FIA to swap places
with Juan,"
Ralf explained. "Sam told me to do so and I slowed
down. Right after that I had an engine failure. It’s a shame because we usually
have reliable engines and my car was going very fast, for the fuel load I had."

Schumacher, Ralf Spin out of session / race 4 pts Spin in FFP1

Ralf Schumacher was the first driver to spin in the slightly damp conditions of Friday’s first practice session. He spun off the track and across the damp grass but was able to recover, eventually finishing fifth in the session, despite another spin.

Schumacher, Ralf Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Crash in FFP1

In the closing moments of Friday’s first practice session Ralf Schumacher spun
and lightly touched the wall, knocking the rear wing of his Williams.

"We have done a lot of work today. As usual on a Friday we were a bit
conservative and concentrated on race set-up instead of trying to get a good time
in,"
Ralf explained. "We think we have also made our tyre choice.
The track was very slippery, therefore several drivers spun. In the first hour,
when the track was still a bit damp in some places, I went off and slid backwards
taking off my rear wing in the process."

Schumacher, Ralf Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Hitting Montoya on lap 2

On the second lap of the race Juan-Pablo Montoya tried to pass Ralf Schumacher
under braking around the outside of the first corner. As the two Williams drivers
turned in Montoya was ahead but Ralf Spun his car, pushing Montoya on to the grass
and knocking his own rear-wing off. Montoya rejoined the race in seventh place
and Ralf pitted to have a new rear-wing fitted. Williams technical director, Patrick
Head was furious with his drivers and promised he would have stern words with
his two drivers.

Head said: "I’m not into apportioning blame between the two of them.
We’ve had some fantastic drivers in the past but they just haven’t driven into
each other. It’s absolutely ridiculous. For the amount of effort that goes into
this, to have that happen is completely unacceptable. We’ll talk about it afterwards
and try to sort out how it doesn’t happen again."

The crash probably prevented Williams securing third place in the race. Montoya
was closing rapidly on McLaren driver David Coulthard in the closing laps but
ran out of time to catch him.

Schumacher, Ralf (Williams) Off the track 1 pts Over the grass in Qualifying 1

Predictably, Ralf Schumacher’s first-foray in Formula One’s new “one-lap” qualifying format ended in tears at the very first corner. Ralf was never famed for his ability to cope under pressure and this “early wobble” hinted of a return to his old “weed whacking” days.

Coming into the fast, right – left chicane, the blurry eyed German missed his braking point and slid over the grass at the apex of the corner, loosing valuable time in the process. Obviously flustered, he did his best to make a bad situation worse by locking the brakes into turn three. The resulting 1:27.420 lap time was highly unimpressive and it meant that an embarrassed Ralf would be running fifth in the following days qualifying session.

Schumacher, Ralf (Williams) Off the track 1 pts Over the grass in Qualifying 2

Ralf Schumacher was forced to run fifth in Saturday’s qualifying session. The
track was dusty and Ralf must have sensed de-jevu as he approached the first tun
because he duplicated his error that premiered in Friday’s qualifying session,
the one that had put him in the predicament in the first place.

Despite his slide over the grass, Ralf remained optimistic despite his lowly
ninth position on the grid.

"I made a mistake in the first sector which cost me a few tenths of
a second. Today I have had to pay the price for my performance on Friday as this
caused my early starting time when the track was not in its best condition,"

Ralf said. "I am not too worried about the two Sauber cars in front of
me, I think they can be sorted out in the race."

Ralf had been super-critical of the team during pre-season testing, complaining
about the car’s lack of development. His sudden change of heart may have been
tempered by the uneasy fact that Montoya has qualified the mutant fw24/25 in third
place.

Schumacher, Ralf (Williams) Spin off and recover 1 pts Spin on lap 17 pushing, Alonso off

On lap seventeen a slow pitstop delayed Ralph Schumacher in the pits. The Williams’
right-rear wheel nut must have been a hot rock in the mechanics hands as precious
seconds were fumbled away.

Ralf had been battling to keep ahead of the Renaults on track and he needed
to make a fast exit to the pits. Ralf was flustered: reputed to be the worst over-taker
in the sport he had to get out in front of the blue and yellow cars as he had
always found such manoeuvres very uncomfortable. As the German pulled out of the
pits Schumacher’s mirros conformed, that Alonso had come into play and Ralf stamped
his foot "mid temper-tantrum" and spun across the grass at turn one,
dropping him to seventeenth and last place. It was not good news for Alonso either
as he was pulled off the track in avoidance.

Schumacher, Ralf (Williams) Spin off and recover 1 pts Spin on lap 11 that forced Trulli to take to the grass in avoidance

On lap eleven Ralf Schumacher was pushing hard. He had been on the receiving end of a lot of criticism and or own he had the hammer down. He was fighting Trulli for sixth position but succumbed to the Italian’s pressure and spun under braking into turn one. This would have been great for Trulli had the FW25 not spun into his path, forcing him on to the grass in avoidance. Fortunately, both drivers were able to recover their cars and rejoin the race.

Schumacher, Ralf (Williams) Crash due to driver error level 4 4 pts Crash in Saturday practice

Ralf Schumacher had to qualify in the spare FW25 after he crashed his race chassis
in Saturday’s second practice session.

The FW25 was in its full 2003 specification for the first time and Ralf was
enjoying a renascence of his own. Shuey Jnr was pushing hard through Variante
Alta, too hard. As he exited the right-left flick, he applied the power too soon
and he drifter wide over the "grasscrete," far past the kerbs on the
corner’s exit.

The rear of the car lost grips as its tyres reverberated, pitching the car
into a 180 degree spin before it was abruptly arrested by the tyre barriers. The
impact was far from cushioned and the FW25′s left-hand side suspension endured
the brunt of the impact and was smashed.

Schumacher, Ralf (Williams) Off the track Damaging chassis by driver error 4 pts

Falling off the track after being overtaken by Alonso, damaging his Williams in the process

Alonso?s lap thirty-six pit stop had allowed Ralf Schumacher up into second position, behind his brother, Michael. Following his strop the Spaniard set about hunting the Schumacher bothers, Ralf being the first to receive his attentions.

Ralf?s Williams was handling like a dog, its traction out of the slow corner?s was woeful leaving the German in a vulnerable position. Ralf drove as defensively as he was able until he succumbed to Alonso?s pressure on lap forty.

Ralf slid wide in turn three and lost a significant amount of what traction he had off the swept racing line. Alonso simple had to drive past the flagging BMW powered car but Ralf did not give up. He tried to hold his line as best he could but he picked up understeer, which resulted in the German skipping over the gravel before rejoining the track. His time loss had been minimal but Schumacher Junior had damaged his FW25?s bodywork, something that would slow him for the balance of the race.

“After all the testing we did on this track, we thought we could achieve a better result. But after the struggle that we went through this weekend, we are reasonably happy with fourth and fifth positions,” Ralf said. “When I went off the circuit a part of my bodywork got ripped, which caused my car to oversteer quite a lot. In the last 16 laps I had a hard but fair fight with Cristiano da Matta. All in all this weekend showed that we have a lot of work ahead of us.”
