At the start Lamy triggered a multiple pile up that would see four cars eliminated. Lamy’s Minardi hit Coulthard’s McLaren. Fisichella had to brake hard to avoid his Minardi team-mate and he was collect by Riccardo Rosset. All cars were terminally damaged and all four drivers were out of the race, there and then.

At the start of the race J.J. Lehto stalled his Benetton and Lamy plunged into the back of the Benetton. Both were out on the spot. Lamy was uninjured but Lehto sustained a bruised arm. The race was not red flagged but continued under the control of the safety car.

Both Herbert and Lamy was wrestling with there ill handling Lotuses for the entire balance of the race. On lap sixty-one Herbert span out of the race to be followed on lap sixty-two by Lamy. This was a disappointing end to the young Portuguese driver in front of his home crowd.

Lamy spun and stalled his Lotus 107B in Saturday qualifying. With his car stuck out on the circuit he had to share Herbert’s car for the balance of the session. Herbert was none too pleased.

In an impressive display the Portuguese Formula One novice was able to spin his Lotus in both qualifying session. This was probably due to problems with the car’s active suspension.

As the lights went green Lamy swerved across the track into Katayama’s Tyrrell. The Lotus bounced off the Tyrrell, spinning across the track. Lamy did not dip the clutch fast enough, the engine stalled and he was out of the race.
