Diniz was eliminated at the start but Martini continued up until lap twenty-three, when he retired with a gear box failure. Andrea Montermini was caught up in the incident. He pitted his Pacific at the end of the lap. The mechanics replaced the upper left rear wishbone and track rod. Montermini rejoined, albeit after loosing seven laps. He was not classified in the finish, due to being ten laps down; (the maximum allowable is 8 laps.)

As he had done so his Arrows had collected an amount of turf that was then being dropped on the circuit in great clods as he continued to circulate. This was clearly dangerous and need to be cleared under the safety car.

Coulthard, having qualified in fourteenth place was well down the order and had to spin his McLaren to avoid the strickened Arrows. Suddenly Mika Salo performed a spin turn and slewed right into Coulthard’s McLaren, damaging its nose cone. Coulthard needed a trip to the pits at the end of the lap to have a replacement fitted. The safety car was deployed in view of all the mayhem so Coulthard did not loos too much time. Salo pulled in at the end of the first lap, too damaged to continue Diniz got as far as lap four before the damage his Arrows had sustained put him out of the race.

Takagi was able to finish the race abet three laps behind the winner Hakkinen. Diniz retired from the race a few laps later on lap forty three when the damage sustained in the incident caused him to lose control of his Sauber and spin off the track.

I did this at the chicane at the top of the hill, but I was upset and lost my concentration and spun under braking. The car was over steering in any case and I let myself get caught out.”

Diniz, Pedro (Sauber) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts At the re-start Damon hill’s Jordan slowed dramatically in the first turn due to an electrical problem with his Jordan. Alex Wurz was right behind Hill and he had to swerve dramatically in order to avoid the Jordan. In doing so he collected the Sauber of Diniz, pitching it into a barrel role. (Wurz was eliminated there and then.) The Sauber slammed down on its rollover bar, skidding across the kerb and onto the grass, breaking the structure in the process. The safety car was deployed while the bruised but intact Diniz was extracted from the car. It was a lucky escape. “I had a good start, but when I came out of the first corner I had no power and could not get out of the way.” Explained Hill. “The ensuing accident was very nasty; I was it happen and there was nothing I could do. I was Pedro fly past me and was very worried as I was on the scene as they were tending to him. I am very relived to hear he is OK.”
