12 pts | Let Hamilton know exactly how he felt about Monaco and the shove in qualifying. In joining the hot heads of F1, Maldonado had seemed to have enough. After the flag had fallen on Q2, Maldonado caught up with Hamilton and cut sharply in front of the British driver ensuring there was less than enough room for the maneuver. The resulting collision damaged both cars and put Hamilton’s participation in Q3 in doubt. Hamilton was quick to assign blame to Maldonado in radioing to his team that it was deliberate. Maldonado stated that he “did not know what happened” even sometime later. Whether this was Williams PR or just plain denial it is unclear. What was clear to the stewards was that Maldonado deserved a 5 place grid penalty. This relegated him to 21st on the grid. |

As he exited the corner and opened up for the main straight, the back of the car stepped out and he went into the barriers. The front of the car was damage but was repairable. Initially, it was assumed Maldonado had opened his DRS too early which caused the expected change in downforce but inadvertently sent him into the barrier. However, Williams later revealed that Maldonado span the wheels of his Williams and he was unable to catch it. |
