Barilla retired from the race on lap fifty-five. He had expressed worries over the tight fit of the Minardi cockpit but he had vowed to finish the race. He proved that discretion is the better part of Valour when he pulled in to retire as his left arm had gone so numb he would have been in grave danger if he had continued.

In the Friday qualifying session Barilla was driving on the limit and beyond. He lost control of his Minardi under braking and nearly took Mansell of the track, ruining both their laps. “I thought about trying to out-accelerate him, “recounted Mansell, “but I think I would have been in very serious trouble if I had chosen that option. As it was, I stood on the anchors like crazy.”

On the first lap of the second start Barilla lost control of his Minardi in grand style though Eau Rouge. The resulting crash punctured a hole in the armaco and scattered debris all over the track. The red flags were produced for a second time. This allowed Donnelly’s damaged Lotus to be repaired in time for the third start. Thus, the BCC were denied his help in the commentary although I am sure he preferred to race.
