Panis, Olivier Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Turning in on Button into Ste Devote, eliminating both drivers.

On lap fifty-two a resurgent Jenson Button darted up the inside of Olivier Panis under braking into Ste Devote. The Frenchman did not see the Renault and he turned in on his normal line. The two cars collided, coming to a rest on the racing line, both drivers eliminated. It was a bitter pill for Panis who had yet to finish a Grand prix in 2002, seven starts and seven retirements.

“I had a good start and managed to move up to 16th at the end of the first lap,” Panis said. “We had a one-stop strategy and this could have worked out for us. The car was running well and I didn’t have any problems, so everything was on target until Button hit me while I was braking and turning into St Devote. I didn’t see him coming and you don’t expect someone to overtake there. It was a racing incident though so we need to forget about it and focus on preparing for Canada.”

Panis, Olivier Caused a multiple pile-up level 1 5 pts Hitting Sato on lap 1.

On the left hander after the start BAR’s Olivier Panis was too ambitious into the first corner at his home Grand Prix he turned in on Jordan’s Takuma Sato. Both cars collided and ran across the gravel, as did the Jaguar of De la Rosa who was caught in the melee. Poetic justice was served, as Panis was the only driver who needed to pit for repairs.

“The start was good and I was side by side with Olivier going into Turn One. Unfortunately Olivier turned in on me, we tangled, and there was nowhere for me to go except onto the gravel. That damaged the barge board and underneath of the car, causing huge understeer and it was difficult to stay on the circuit,” Sato explained. “I tried, but coming into the last corner I lost grip and the car just went straight onto the gravel. This weekend has been very tough for us, particularly with Giancarlo’s accident. We’re so pleased he’s okay and I’m looking ahead to Hockenheim now.”

Panis, Olivier Spin off and recover 1 pts Panis?s self- enduced vibration.

Panis was out of the race on lap twenty when he pulled into his pit garage to retire his BAR004 from the race due to a vibration that was an artefact of his collision with Sato in the first lap of the race.

What can I say? I’m very disappointed and, to be honest, very angry with Sato’s move into the first corner but I think it was very clear for everybody to see. I came into the pits and it looked like I just had damage to the bodywork. I went back out again and despite being a lap down, I continued to push and improve my lap times,” he said. “The car felt very strange though and I was very conscious of a vibration which we couldn’t pinpoint. I kept going while the team looked at everything on the telemetry but I had lost so much time that it wasn’t worth the risk to continue.”

Panis, Olivier Dunce 1 pts Hitting “kill” switch and stalling in FFP1

If BAR boss, David Richards did not have enough problems on his hands following
Jacques Villeneuve’s crash in Friday’s first practice session, Olivier Panis cruised
past the accident and stopped dead. BAR were Honda’s preferred team, at Honda’s
home race, on Honda’s own track and both BAR cars finished first practice before
the halfway mark.

Panis’ problem did not look serious and indeed it was only an embarrassing
driver error. Panis stopped on the circuit after stalling his engine as he slowed
to check if Villeneuve was unhurt.

"It appears he pressed the ‘kill’ switch," said an embarrassed
team boss David Richards
