Grouillard was find $50000 by the race stewards after an incident in Thursday Friday qualifying. He spun his Tyrrell at Portier and he nearly taken out the marshals who had come to his aid as he performed a spin turn, very dangerous.

Grouillard pushed Gachot off the road at the old pit hairpin on lap fourteen, just after he had made his first pit stop. Bertrand was given a push start by the marshal and he was black-flagged. Rough justice indeed.

In the confusion at the Adelaide hairpin caused by Schumacher’s move on Senna, Gachot had rammed Suzuki and Gachot was out. Chiesa has also had an altercation with Gugelmin the resulting damage to both cars spelt early retirement from the race for them both. In the melee Grouillard had the nose box taken off his Tyrrell and he needed to pit.

A rain shower had forced the organisers to stop the race on lap nineteen. When the race resumed Grouillard jumped the start by a long way and was subsequently given a ten second stop-go penalty.

On lap fourteen Wendlinger, who had been delayed by the first lap incident collected the Tyrrell of Grouillard as he came to overtake it. Grouillard then spun across the track and was collected by the Jordan of Modena. The accident had claimed three cars and it was thought that the safety car might have to be deployed; it was not.

Grouillard destroyed his qualifying when a spin in the dry Friday session meant that he had to abandon his race car out on the track. Needless to say the T car was not to the Frenchman’s liking.

At the start of the race Martini, in his Dallara punted Alboreto’s Footwork form behind, this pitched the Italian into a spin. Grouillard’s Tyrrell collected the wayward Footwork. Alboreto then spun into the wall due to the rear suspension damage that he had sustained, debris being strewn over the entire track. All three were out of the race. Herbert who was caught up in the chaos needed a trip to the pits for a new front nose cone and a replacement steering arm.

At the second start it looked as if Grouillard had stalled the engine in his Fondmetal. Actually he had seen a profusion of waved yellow flags due to Lehto’s smoking engine and he had turned his own engine off. The start was aborted for the second time and Grouillard was sent to the back of the grid for the third start.

In Saturday’s qualifying session Grouillard disgraced himself. He was unaware that the engine in his Fomet had “let go” and he drove around the Magny Cours track depositing oil all along they way. The other drivers had a few stern opinions about his actions.

In the fist corner Gachot’s Jordan spun in front of Grouillard’s Fomet. Grouillard had to brake had in avoidance and he hit a kerb and damaged the front wing on his car. This was to have a detrimental effect on the handling of the car.

In Friday morning practice Martini spun his Minardi on the tight Phoenix circuit. To make matters worse he was collected by Olivier Grouillard’s Osella, sustaining a damaged rear wing in the incident.

In the latter stages of the race Grouillard was holding up a great number of the midfield runners, as he was reluctant to be lapped. This made it problematic for the leaders too when they encountered the train of slower cars.
