5 pts | Hitting Fisichella at the start of the race, (4 points) and the subsequent safety car, (4 points.) As Ralf Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello collided at the head of the field into the first corner of the race a shock wave was sent down the field. Fisichella lost control of his Jordan after being hit by Heildfeld as the pack slowed. “I could see a big accident developing in front of me and I tried to keep to the inside to avoid trouble,” Nick explained. “Unfortunately I couldn’t avoid getting caught up in the aftermath. It would have been better for me if the race had been stopped, but that’s racing.” Massa was very disappointed too. “I didn’t intend my first Grand Prix to end this way! I made a good start and then saw the big crash in front,” he explained. “I slowed down and went to the inside, and I got through the first corner without hitting anyone or anything, but then Fisichella caught me from behind and that was it. My race was over.” “I am really very angry about what happened today, as I believe the car was good enough for us to win some points,” Giancarlo said. “It has felt good all weekend, even better than I had expected, and I was looking forward to a good race. When I saw Ralf go flying through the air, I slowed down to avoid the collision, but was hit by Heidfeld who hadn’t slowed down and had gone off into the gravel and lost control of his car. It isn’t in the first corner that you win the race, so I am not too happy with what he did! To be fair to him he came up to talk to me after the race and explained that he just lost control of the car when he saw Ralf go off. I also think it is ridiculous that the race wasn’t stopped as most of the drivers were left to watch the race on TV!” |

1 pts | 10 points for hitting the medical car in the warm up and a further 5 points for the ensuing red flag. Bernoldi had an accident at turn one in the race warm-up. The safety car was deployed and the medical car parked by the Arrows. Heildfeld was unsighted by the Ferrari of Michael Schumacher and saw the accident to late that he had to take to the grass in avoidance. (Given that he knew that the safety car had been deployed he may have thought about slowing down a touch.) As he took to the grass the driver of the medical car opened it’s door and the Sauber ploughed into the Mercedes’ open door. The door of the medical car was almost torn off. The medical car and the Sauber were quite seriously damaged. The session was red flagged. “I braked hard, but the car started to slide and the only way I could pass the Arrows was on the left,” Heidfeld said. |

2 pts | 1 point for speeding in the pit-lane and 4 for the subsequent ?drive through penalty.? When Heidfeld brought his Sauber into the pits for his first planned stop of the afternoon a problem with the refuelling rig prevented the team form refuelling the car. He was back in the pits as soon as he was able to take fuel onboard but in doing so be broke the pit-lane speed limit and had to serve a drive through penalty. “I thought that the team had called me in on the radio for my first stop, but it turned out that they hadn’t. So when I arrived at the pits nothing was ready, and I had to come in again three laps later,” Heidfeld explained. “Then I got a drive-through penalty for speeding in the pit lane. That was annoying, because I felt that the Renaults were holding us up in the early laps even though my car was oversteering quite a bit. It was better on a low fuel load, but with four stops, what can you do? Altogether, a frustrating afternoon.” |

1 pts | 8 points for taking Sato out of the race and 4 for the resulting safety car. At the end of lap twenty-seven the safety car pulled in after Panis’s Bar was removed form the track. As the race proper re-started Heidfeld lost control of his Sauber and spun. As Yoong arrived at turn two he locked his brakes as Sato and Montoya were going through the corner. Heidfeld, reacting to Yoong locking up, broke hard and lost control of his Sauber, some distance from the corner. The Sauber spun around, just missing the Williams but hit the Jordan, end first. The two cars slew off, into the gravel trap. Heidfeld is quickly out of his car but Sato remains in the car although he is seen to be moving his hands. The Safety Car is sent out again as the medical teams go to work on Sato. At the end of the lap Coulthard and Fisichella both pit. It later emerges that Sato had not suffered any injuries, expect tissue damage to his right leg, despite the severity of the crash. Sauber blamed the loss of control on cold brakes after the safety car but Jordan speculated it may have been a suspension failure, given that Massa had been eliminated from the race with such a suspension failure. “I made a great start to beat both BMW Williams and held third place for the first lap. After they overtook I was comfortable in fifth place and everything was going well. But after the first safety car incident Coulthard and I were side-by-side going down to the hairpin,” he explained. “ I saw a cloud of tyre smoke as Yoong braked really hard and early ahead of us, and maybe I pressed the pedal too hard as a result while the brakes were still cool. The car got away from me and next thing I knew I was going backwards down the grass. I’m just thankful that Takuma is okay.” |

1 pts | 1 point for pit lane speeding and 5 for the subsequent drive through penalty, then 1 point for speeding as he took the penalty and 5 for the second drive-through. As Ralf Schumacher pitted on lap fort-four for an unscheduled stop after problems with his refuelling rig the race steward’s announced that both Nick Heildfeld and Alex Yoong would have to make another trip to the pits too. They were both required to take drive through penalties due to pit lane speeding. To make matters worse Nick was too quick exiting the pitlane after taking his penalty do he had to come back in again for a second penalty. “In the beginning my car felt very good and I was having no problem staying ahead of Fisichella,” Nick explained. “After my stop I got held up in traffic and then I learned of my first speeding penalty, a drive through. I got another one as I left the pits on that occasion, and this time it was a 10s stop and go for the second offence. What else is there to say?” |

1 pts | Flat spotting his tyres in qualifying: resulting in his car developing a vibration that his mechanics were unable to cure. Nick Heidfeld suffered technical woes in qualifying. Heidfeld’s car was suffering from a vibration that “Quick Nick” induced after flat spotting his tyres on his first qualifying run. The mechanics worked though out the session trying to find a cure. It was not forthcoming and suffered they even tried increasing the amount of downforce on the car to minimise the symptom. “I braked too hard and flat-spotted the right front tyre on my first run, and that create vibrations that never went away. Maybe it did some small damage, I don’t know,” he explained. “After that the car never felt as good as it did this morning, but we made a small change for the final run and that was my best. I just pushed flat-out; it was the maximum I could achieve. Ninth is still a good place to start, and I’m confident for the race.” |
