Misc
Piquet, Nelson (Benetton) Mouthing off 5 pts In the pre-race press conference things were getting a little heated and Jean Marie Balestre stepped in and suggested that Mansell would be closely observed in the race. Mansell leapt to he feet shouting the odds, suggesting that the FISA president should be keeping an eye on Senna rather than him. Senna retorted with rapier venom. He pointed out that Mansell had been involved in more than his fair share of incidents out on the track. Senna rounded off his comments with a few choice words that would have made a nun blush. Then Piquet chipped in asking Monsieur Balestre whether a driver had to be killed before FISA stepped in, making good on their threats to penalise certain, leading drivers. This was all hot stuff hours before the Grand prix start, especially as it was beginning to rain.

The spinning Benetton was collected by Alesi in his Ferrari and then Nicola Larini piled in too. “Early on I spun on a slow section of the circuit,” Schumacher explained, “then I tried to pass Nelson on the left but he didn’t see me, so I moved to the right, got wheel spin in a puddle and went sideways. It didn’t seem like a problem but Alesi tried to pass me and hit my front wheel.”

The odds of 400-1 were very favourable. This was tempting fate and when it came for the cars to set off on the parade lap his Benetton failed to fire up. Piquet, Nelson (Benetton) Caused a multiple pile-up level 1 5 pts At the start Piquet lost control of his Benetton under braking for La Source and went sideways. The wayward Benetton collected Mansell’s’ Ferrari and pitched it in to the wall. Behind all this Derek Warwick took his Lotus off the track in avoidance only to be hit from behind by his team mate, Donnelly (who had been hit too,) as he rejoined the track. In the pre-race briefing the organisers stipulated that they would not red flag the race if an incident like this occurred. They performed a swift u-turn and red flagged the event. Piquet and Mansell took the spare cars but the spare Lotus went to Warwick so Donnelly headed off to help the BBC with their commentary.
