The Marshals pushed him into the pit-lane but as the problem persisted he switched to the spare car. He was black flagged a few laps later as he had switched cars when the field was under starters orders.

The polish was taken off his achievement because in the dry qualifying session he missed the call for his car to be weighed and his Friday times were disallowed. This resulted in him starting the race from twenty-third on the grid, his grid position having been determined by his wet session time.

Coulthard, having qualified in fourteenth place was well down the order and had to spin his McLaren to avoid the strickened Arrows. Suddenly Mika Salo performed a spin turn and slewed right into Coulthard’s McLaren, damaging its nose cone. Coulthard needed a trip to the pits at the end of the lap to have a replacement fitted. The safety car was deployed in view of all the mayhem so Coulthard did not loos too much time. Salo pulled in at the end of the first lap, too damaged to continue Diniz got as far as lap four before the damage his Arrows had sustained put him out of the race.

Salo, Mika (Arrows) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts After his car had suffered and engine failure and after a speedy change Salo was back on track with fifteen minutes of Saturdays free practice left. Like Villeneuve had done the previous day, Salo crashed heavily in Eau Rogue. He was unhurt and able to take part in qualifying plus he was able to compare crashed with his good friend, Jacques in a “mine is bigger” than your kind of way.

Unfortunately there was nothing I could do except drive into the wall.”

He kept Ralf Schumacher behind in the later stages of the race much to the thinly veiled anger of Patrick Head. “Unfortunately Ralf fell foul of Ferrari’s cynical approach running a one car team with a blocking tactic to protect Irvine’s position and I am very surprised that Mika Salo was prepared to accept such orders from the pits,” seethed Head. He then went on to praise McLaren’s two-car team and let it be known that he hoped they would win both Championships that year.

In the morning warm up Toyota’s Mika Salo had a sizeable crash in the wet conditions. Coming in to Stewart corner. He hit standing water in the middle of the track as Barrichello flew by. Salo lost the rear end of his Toyota, which pitched the car into a spin. He then hit the wall at the side of the track, losing his car’s front wing in the process.

In the very closing laps of the race Mark Webber was in fifth position, a dream come true for Minardi but Mika Salo was chasing down hard. With just two laps to go Salo was right on Webber’s gearbox until the cars turned in for the first corner. Salo lost the rear of his car and spun, effectively handing the two points to Webber. “We had a great race today. I was hit on the first lap and we had to change the track rod at the rear, but the car felt quick and reliable after that,” Salo said. “I am very happy for the team, they have worked really well this weekend. I have had championship points before but this point is probably the most important.”

Barrichello took fifth pole position of his F1 career at the 2002 Austrian Grand Prix, despite being forced into the gravel at the Remuskurve by Salo’s Toyota at the end of the qualifying session. Salo admitted to a small mistake under braking for the Remuskurve which put Barrichello into the gravel trap.

“Qualifying was very close as expected with every hundredth of a second counting. I couldn’t get the lap done I wanted and suffered from understeer, which we have to improve on,” Mika said. “I am sorry for holding up Rubens on his final flying lap. He was in the blind spot of my mirror and I just didn’t see him.”

On lap twenty-five Salo dived into the pits for the first of his two-stop strategy. He dropped from 10th to 19th. However, there was a problem with his refuelling rig and he returned to the pits again. In doing so he broke the pit-lane speed limit and was given a ten second driving though penalty for his troubles.

On lap eight Mika Salo fell victim of the falling rain. As he turned into Copse corner his Toyota lost traction and the Finn spun across the grass, dropping him from eighth, to eleventh place.

As Toyota’s Mika Salo exited the pits after making his one and only pitstop on lap thirty-one he crossed the white line that demarcated the exit of the pit-lane. This was did not go unnoticed and the race stewards gave the Finn a drive-through penalty, which he took on lap thirty-three.

Mika Salo celebrated his last race by taking a leaf out of Jacques Villeneuve’s book and dyed his hair a Finnish blue. Salo is a close friend of Jacques and they are no strangers to hairdressing. On of their most infamous exploits was also at the Japanese Grand Prix in 1996 when along with David Coulthard they shaved their heads.
