Hakkinen, Mika (McLaren) Dunce 1 pts Having already broken the pit-lane speed limit during his first pit stop on lap twenty five, Hakkinen broke it again as he exited the pit too fast after his second stop on lap fifty. 1996 – San Marino Grand Prix
Misc
Hakkinen, Mika (McLaren) Dunce 1 pts Fighting with Pedro Diniz for tenth place Hakkinen failed to see Schumacher in his mirrors or the waved blue flags. Schumacher lost four second and Diniz and Hakkinen were both called in to ten second stop / go penalties for ignoring the waved blue flags.

Hakkinen, Mika (McLaren) Spin out of session / race 4 pts Hakkinen spun at Rivazza on lap fifty one. He re-joined having lost one place.

1996 – Monaco Grand Prix
Misc
Hakkinen, Mika (McLaren) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Due to a down pour before the start of the race the organisers had to put on a quarter hour practice to allow the drivers to get used to a wet track. Hakkinen was immediately the fastest but he went too far. The accident he found himself in completely wrote off his MP4/11. He had to race in the spare car.

Hakkinen, Mika (McLaren) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Hakkinen, Salo and Irvine all collided with each other resulting in all three’s retirement, their cars locked together on the track. The less than superb Marshalling was partly to blame: more yellow flags were needed. Hakkinen was so mad he pushed one of the marshals out of the way in a most un-gentleman like manner.

1996 – Portuguese Grand Prix
Misc
Hakkinen, Mika (McLaren) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts After Coulthard rejoined after his first pit stop, on lap forty five Hakkinen rammed his team mate at the tight cork screw chicane. Subsequently both needed a trip to the pits, Hakkinen for a new nose box and Coulthard to replace a deflated rear tyre. To add insult to injury Hakkinen got there first and Coulthard had to wait. He was not happy. Hakkinen had to retire on lap fifty two due to damage sustained in the incident.

1995 – Canadian Grand Prix
Misc
Hakkinen, Mika (McLaren) Pit lane blunder 5 pts Hakkinen was fined $10,000 by the race stewards after he ignored the red light at the end of the pit-lane on Saturday afternoon.

Hakkinen, Mika (McLaren) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Hakkinen collided with Herbert coming into the old pit hairpin s he attempted a ridiculous overtaking manoeuvre on the first lap of the race. Hakkinen’s McLaren’s nosecone punctured the side of Herbert’s Benetton destroying its radiators. Both were out on the spot. Herbert was livid “I am absolutely extremely angry. I had made a good start; managed to get ahead of Alesi, then he managed to overtake me but at that stage I was quite happy with sixth place. I had behind me what I though was nice gap behind me, then coming into the hairpin Mika came from nowhere. He braked so late the only way he was going to get around the corner was to hit me, which is exactly what he did. I could have got out of it and was trying very hard but we were interlocked and no matter what I did I could not get free.” Hakkinen was more philosophical, “As I entered the hairpin, trying to overtake Herbert I braked late, but not too hard otherwise I would have locked the wheels. Unfortunately the track was damp at that point and Herbert started sliding in front of me. I could not avoid making contact with him.”

1995 – Belgian Grand Prix
Misc
Hakkinen, Mika (McLaren) Spin out of session / race 4 pts Hakkinen unforgivably spun his McLaren MP4/10 in La Source hairpin in the early stages of the second lap. He stalled the Ilmor v10 and he had to retire there and then.

Misc
Hakkinen, Mika (McLaren) Mouthing off 5 pts After qualifying in thirteenth place Hakkinen had some words about his 1995 car, “There is something fundamentally wrong with the car and because we have no understanding of it, it is impossible to progress. All our data says the MP4/10C should be better, but something basic is not correct with the car.”

1995 – Australian Grand Prix
Misc
Hakkinen, Mika (McLaren) Crash due to technical failure level 1 1 pts As Hakkinen approached the 110-mph corner that leads on to the Brabham straight in Friday qualifying his McLaren’s left-rear tyre suffered an immediate deflation due to a puncture caused by debris on the track surface. The McLaren MP4/10 spun violently over the high kerb and was launched into the air and slammed into the single row of tyres that were in front of a concrete barrier. Hakkinen’s life was saved by the immediate intervention of the Marshals. His head was held straight to stop him from chocking on his own blood and a tracheotomy was performed at the trackside prevented brain damage through loss of oxygen. Hakkinen had sustained a fractured skull but he posted a full recovery. Obviously he took no further part in the race meeting.

1994 – Pacific Grand Prix
Misc
Hakkinen, Mika (McLaren) Caused a multiple pile-up level 1 5 pts After Senna had made a poor start from pole position he though about making a move on Schumacher into the first turn. Schumacher forcibly took the racing line forcibly and Senna moved to the left to take his line into the corner. Hakkinen was coming in hard on the right and as the cars turned in his McLaren touched Senna’s Williams and pitched it into a spin. Senna was then hit my Larini’s Ferrari and they were both out. Hakkinen continued. Senna was fit to be tied, “I made a normal start but I didn’t get a brilliant one. I had too much wheel spin so Michael took the lead. On the first corner we were close together and it was possible to try an overtaking manoeuvre but that would have been very risky so I decided to stay second and be safe. Then, when I was in the corner Mika came from behind, hit me and I was out. As a consequence other cars span and Larini came along and hit me. I was out he (Hakkinen) should not be allowed to get way with this. His driving was wrong and it should not be permitted. Many of these young drivers just seem to not know the rules.” Hakkinen was more philosophical, “It is a pity I touched Ayrton but he braked late as Michael did in front of him, I could not avoid him.”

Hakkinen, Mika (McLaren) Unsportsman like driving 3 pts As Damon Hill tried an overtaking manoeuvre on Hakkinen he pushed Damon Hill’s Williams up onto the kerb, causing the Williams to spin. Hill l was furious, “He closed the door on me. He put me on the kerb and I spun off. I should have known it would happen because he is a bit of a wild boy. He comes up to you on the grid and shakes your hand, which is jolly sporting and makes him seem like a normal person. But when he gets into the car and puts his helmet on he turns into some sort of Demon.”

Hakkinen, Mika (McLaren) Stall on grid 7 pts A loss of hydraulic pressure caused Hakkinen to stall his car’s engine at the first refuelling stop on lap eighteen. The problem would later cause Hakkinen’s ability to change gears crushed so he retired on the next lap.

Hakkinen, Mika (McLaren) Caused a multiple pile-up level 1 5 pts As there was an accident at the back of the grid at the start involving de Cesaris, Alboreto and Zanardi, Hakkinen triggered one at the head of the field. Coming into the first corner he tried to shoot down the inside of the pit wall. In doing so he forced Coulthard’s Williams into Blundell’s Tyrrell. Hakkinen suddenly found himself in real trouble as his McLaren snapped sideways across the path of the field, plunging into the barrier on the right hand side of the track. As Blundell also speared off also both Jordan’s had nowhere to go and had to take to the gravel in avoidance. Frentzen found himself in the gravel too, after the spinning Tyrrell of Blundell had collected him. All in all it was Hakkinen who got the blame of the first lap chaos. He was judged to have triggered the multiple accident and as he was racing under a one race suspended ban he was prevented form entering the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Prost was of the opinion that the rules were not being applied fairly.

Hakkinen, Mika (McLaren) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Hakkinen got it all wrong in the Parabolica, (the fast corner leading onto the start finish straight) at the end of lap thirty-three. Misc
Hakkinen, Mika (Lotus (Team)) Spin out of session / race 4 pts With four laps to go Hakkinen got ahead for Brundle. Midway around the last lap the Finn spun his Lotus when the engine suddenly died. 1991 – United States Grand Prix
Misc
Hakkinen, Mika (Lotus (Team)) Dunce 1 pts In his very first Formula one race Hakkinen had a few small problems. In the opening stages of the race he drove over a sizeable bump in his Lotus. The jarring caused one of Mika’s knees to trip the quick release mechanism on the cars steering wheel. Hakkinen had a serious “moment” as he realised there had been a significant loss of control due to the loose steering wheel. He pitted twice as a result, the first time to check the steering wheel and the second time to have the steering wheel replaced. He slogged it out at the back of the field until a loose oil union caused his retirement with an engine fire.

Hakkinen did not get into the pits quick enough; he stayed out too long and the levels of grip afforded to him by the wet weather tyres on the drying track was inadequate and he spun of the track and into retirement on lap six.

1991 – Japanese Grand Prix
Misc

Misc
Hakkinen, Mika (McLaren) Breach of technical regulations<br />
1 pts Hakkinen was one of seven drivers called before the race stewards after the Saturday morning practice session to explain why he had set his fastest time of the session under yellow flags. 1998 – French Grand Prix
Misc
Hakkinen, Mika (McLaren) Spin out of session / race 4 pts Hakkinen momentarily overtook Irvine on lap twenty only to loose the position, almost immediately as he spun in the tight right hander before the start/finish straight. 1998 – British Grand Prix
Misc
Hakkinen, Mika (McLaren) Spin off and recover 1 pts On lap forty-one Hakkinen spun his McLaren at bridge corner. The spin was massive but Hakkinen kept control of the car as it span over the gravel and then the grass. He was able to tip toe back onto the circuit but the car’s front wing endplate was badly damaged as was it’s diffuser. Without the safety car his thirty seven-second lead over Schumacher would have been sufficient for him to have won the race.

Hakkinen, Mika (McLaren) Spin out of session / race 4 pts After the safety car had been called in Hakkinen had Schumacher breathing down his neck. Due to the damage sustained to his car in his earlier off track excursion Hakkinen could not turn into corners, as he would have liked. On lap fifty he under steered off the track at Bridge. He was able to rejoin the track, but by that time Schumacher was long gone.

1998 – Italian Grand Prix
Misc
Hakkinen, Mika (McLaren) Spin out of session / race 4 pts On lap forty-four six Hakkinen’s McLaren was launched into a terrifying 170mph spin over the gravel at the second chicane. 1999 – Australian Grand Prix
Misc
Hakkinen, Mika (McLaren) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts In Friday’s first free practice session Hakkinen came out of the last turn of the track too fast and lost the rear end of his McLaren. He smashed in to the concrete retaining wall seriously damaging the car. Hakkinen was unscathed and he was pleased by the protection offered by the head pads on either side of the cockpit. “The new additional head protection worked superbly in the cockpit as it did for Johnny Herbert when he crashed during the tests at Barcelona. As for me, I was just pushing a little hard. Naturally I am annoyed with myself for going off but now at least I know the limit of the car.”

Hakkinen, Mika (McLaren) Dunce 1 pts Hakkinen had an unfortunate accident as he left the garage in his MP4/14 on hi way to take up hi grid position for the start of the race. 1999 – Monaco Grand Prix
Misc
Hakkinen, Mika (McLaren) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Hakkinen had a scare on lap thirty-nine. He lost control of his McLaren under braking for Mirabeau, sliding down the escape road. He did rejoin the race but he had lost a significant amount of time. The loss of control had been due to the McLaren loosing adhesion on oil dropped by Takagi’s Arrows as it suffered a major engine failure. “I tried to turn into Mirabeau, the rear wheels began to lock so I decided to steer down the escape road rather than risk spinning into the barrier.”

1999 – Italian Grand Prix
Misc
Hakkinen, Mika (McLaren) Spin out of session / race 4 pts As Hakkinen braked coming down into the first chicane on lap thirty he accidentally selected fist instead of second gear. This caused the rear wheels of hi MP4/14 to lock and he spun of the track, on to the grass and into retirement, the anti stall mechanisms in the engine failing. The Finn was overcome with emotion and was shown on television crying.

1999 – Japanese Grand Prix
Misc
Hakkinen, Mika (McLaren) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts In qualifying Hakkinen was slowing coming into the last chicane on the track about to start his hot lap when Alesi came upon him on his hot lap. The loss of down force caused Alesi to straight-line the chicane and spin in front of Hakkinen, both of their laps in the bin. “As a result of this I did not get the chicane to improve my time.” Reported Hakkinen. “I had to ease up slightly because I didn’t want to catch Frentzen, who was a head of me, too quickly. I think Jean may have got too close and possibly lost front aerodynamics. He went straight and spun.” Most observers agreed it was six of one and half a dozen of the other.
