In the closing stages of the race Alboreto was battling for seventh place with Karl Wendlinger. On lap seventy Alboreto tried a move into the tight left-hand hairpin, Redman. There was not enough room for both the cars and they touched and slid of into the gravel trap where they were stuck. Wendlinger and Alboreto’s retirement promoted Johnny Herbert’s Lotus to seventh place.

Alboreto blocked Berger in the final stages of the race, not wanting to be lapped. “He did not look in his mirrors for three laps with the result that my engine was overheating madly and losing power. For the last fifteen laps it was a case of just making it to the finish” Berger explained. Alboreto was thrown out of Ferrari at the end of 19888 to make way for Nigel Mansell and it is reputed that he never forgave the team.

Damon Hill baulked Alboreto in Friday’s qualifying session. Alboreto got he revenge by putting his Minardi into Hill’s FW16B knocking its front suspension out of joint. Hill was just about able to limp back to the pits, but he was not pleased.

In the Friday’s free practice session Hill was edged up onto the grass by Alboreto’s Lola in the tight infield section on the Sachskurve. Hill spun and ended in the gravel trap. Hill, was usually calm and collected but was livid and stormed into the Lola garage to give Alboreto a piece of his mind. “It was pathetic,” said Hill. “I hardly wanted to waste time talking about it. He left the door open to allow me through on the inside then he chopped across, knocking off my nose wings and pitching me into the run off.”

Alboreto spun his Footwork on the exit of Mirabeau as he was being pressured by Brundle. He simply just put too much power down and he was lucky to continue with his car undamaged. As Alboreto was messing around trying to get his car facing the right direction he blocked the track and held Senna up for some ten seconds.

The Friday qualifying session had to be red flagged after Alboreto lost control of his Footwork and the end of a quick lap and slammed into the pit wall. The car came to rest on the racing line, with debris covering the track the race organisers were left with little choice.

In the Saturday qualifying session Berger was baldy balked by Alboreto on the straight that led into the Parabolica. Berger accused Alboreto of swerving into his path. Alboreto, who was in the spare FA13 at the time was unrepentant and suggested that Berger was entirely to blame.

At the start of the race Martini, in his Dallara punted Alboreto’s Footwork form behind, this pitched the Italian into a spin. Grouillard’s Tyrrell collected the wayward Footwork. Alboreto then spun into the wall due to the rear suspension damage that he had sustained, debris being strewn over the entire track. All three were out of the race. Herbert who was caught up in the chaos needed a trip to the pits for a new front nose cone and a replacement steering arm.

Alboreto was battling with Grouillard’s Osella when on lap nine the two car came into contact as Alboreto tried to muscle his way past Grouillard. The Osella was pitched into the air and ended up in the gravel trap. Grouillard was out and the aggressor, Alboreto continued. Grouillard had keep the engine running but the gravel had jammed his car’s steering.

Both Pirro and Alboreto were eliminated from the race half way around the twelfth lap. the had contrived to entangled the Dallara and the Footwork and the cars were going nowhere. Both of the Italians were out of the race.

Alboreto spun his A11B off the track on lap fifty-one with only two laps left to run. It was a bitter pill for the Italian, ex-Ferrari driver to swallow indeed retiring so ingloriously, so close to the end of the race.
