Andretti, Michael (McLaren) Caused a multiple pile-up level 1 5 pts All hell broke loose when the lights turned green. Andretti seemed to be wrong footed as a super fast start catapulted Karl Wendlinger’s Sauber through the middle of the field.
Andretti chopped across to the right hand side of the track and instantly collected Berger’s Ferrari. The cars were locked together, and slid of into the gravel trap where Andretti’s car vaulted over Berger’s Ferrari smashing down on the Ferrari’s role hoop, inches away from Berger’s head. “I was forced right,” said Andretti. “Michael was on my right,” said Wendlinger; “He was trying to go outside me but I held my line. He just seemed to swerve right when he went on to the brakes.” Berger was furious; “I don’t understand how something like this can happen. Andretti moved so violently that I had no time to react. I couldn’t move out of the way, I couldn’t brake.”

Misc
Andretti, Michael (McLaren) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Andretti’s first Formula One race in Europe was attended by his father, the ex-Formula One World Champion. The race started in wet conditions. Andretti took off Karl Wendlinger’s Sauber on the first lap at Coppice, trying to follow his team-mate, Senna past the Austrian. The gap that he tried to thread his McLaren through was just too small and the two collided. Both Andretti and Wendlinger were in the gravel and out of the race. Three starts three crashes. I bet Mario was gutted! Michael was apologetic, “When I tried to take Wendlinger I suddenly realised he probably hadn’t seen me, so I braked hard but I couldn’t avoid hitting him.” Wendlinger was not in a charitable mood, “Andretti wanted to overtake me in a place where overtaking is just impossible. He crashed into the rear of my car. Michael apologised for his mistake but this doesn’t change much for me.”

The McLaren was pitched into a spin and onto the wet grass. He was suck and had to retire. Four races, and three retirements due to crashing / hitting other cars. Andretti, like most racing drivers had an excuse, “Our brake balance was set up for the wet and I couldn’t reach to adjust the control. My rear wheels started to lock when I tried to have a go at Wendlinger and locked a second time, which caused my to nearly overshoot a corner. When I finally went off I was not trig to pass him, but the car just swapped ends on me.”

This time he hit the kerb too hard and bent the rocker arm on to p of the MP4/8’s front suspension. He had no choice but to limp back to the pits. Misc
Andretti, Michael (McLaren) Mouthing off 5 pts Andretti was third in the 1993 Italian Grand Prix but he stood down form the team for the balance of the season after the Italian race in preparation for a full time return to Indy cars in 1994. “The decision is purely business,” said Andretti. “It comes down to timing. Ron, at this time, was not ready to make the decision for his 1994 driver line-up. Having Chip’s (Ganassi) offer on the table I though that if I was to let that slip away I could be put in a position where I would not have anything next year.”
