On the first lap of the race Papis spun his footwork hart at the Varante Ascari. Montermini was collected in his Pacific as well as the Fortis of Diniz and Roberto Moreno and Bouillon’s Sauber. The tack was covered in debris and the race stewards had no alternative other than to red flag the race. Montermini and Moreno were unable to take the re-start.
