Donnelly had been suffering through the course of the weekend with cramp due to an altered seating position in the Lotus. His right leg had become numb and he pressed the throttle too hard coming out of a corner on lap fort-four. He spun into the gravel and retirement from the race.

Donnelly finished the race in seventh place behind his team mate. His visor had become so dirty that he was following the outline of his team-mates car for the last few laps and he missed a pit board fifteen laps from the end, that was calling him in to the pits for a tyre stop.

Senna has a harmless spin in Friday qualifying due to handling problems with his MP4/5B. As martin Donnelly approached the scene of Senna’s spin a broken wheel nut came off and his right rear wheel hurtled toward Senna just hitting one of the McLaren’s wings. Donnelly was able to wrestle his three-wheeled Lotus past the stationary McLaren. It was a lucky escape for both drivers.

At the start Piquet lost control of his Benetton under braking for La Source and went sideways. The wayward Benetton collected Mansell’s’ Ferrari and pitched it in to the wall. Behind all this Derek Warwick took his Lotus off the track in avoidance only to be hit from behind by his team mate, Donnelly (who had been hit too,) as he rejoined the track. In the pre-race briefing the organisers stipulated that they would not red flag the race if an incident like this occurred. They performed a swift u-turn and red flagged the event. Piquet and Mansell took the spare cars but the spare Lotus went to Warwick so Donnelly headed off to help the BBC with their commentary.

Donnelly had a massive accident in the Friday’s qualifying session. The Irishman’s Lotus speared off the track at the sixth gear right handed double apex corner and into the barriers at 170mph+ The car shattered into two and Donnelly lay in the middle of the track still strapped into his seat. He escaped with only two broken legs, a broken heel bone and a broken collarbone. The car’s chassis had absorbed the energy of the impact as it disintegrated. If it had not, in all likelihood his injures would have been much more sever. Sadly he would never race in Formula One again. Lotus though the crash may have been caused by a failure in the suspensions rocker arm.
