After struggling without KERS the Red Bull team gambled on having enough pace in qualifying to get through Q1 and progress to Q2. This, however, was not the case and Webber failed to make the grade qualifying only 18th.

With comparisons to Vettel and Webber’s relationship being made to Irvine and Schumacher, Webber angrily reacted.

Irvine once remarked that having your teammate win five times in a row was “like being hit with a baseball bat”. Webber replied during the Thursday press conference;

“Absolutely f****** ludicrous question mate!” Webber exclaimed. “You’ve known me long enough… you’ve known me long enough. Five wins in a row? Yeah, but that doesn’t mean… he’s not just beaten me, he’s beaten everyone – so no-one will turn up then! We may as well all stay at home.”

He added: “That’s what a competitor does. Nothing lasts forever, that’s the way it goes. Like I said, he’s doing a good job and Malaysia was close between us. So we come here and see how we go. I think… I’ll stop there.”

Coming through turn 9, Webber put too much wheel onto the slippy astroturf on tghe outside of the line. The plastic turf tends to hold water longer than other parts of the track. The result was that Webber span into the inside barrier clipping off the nose of his car.

Webber was lucky to recover back to the pits for repair.

Massa did not receive any damage from the clumpsy overtaking move. Webber outbrake himself and had to turn into the corner. Massa was right where he turned in and Webber lost his nose.

On the way back to the pits, Webber went off at the Parabolica after his broken wing jammed under his car and sent him straight on. Webber was an instant retirement.

During FP1, Webber thought that Glock was letting him through. However, the Virgin driver was not letting Webber though and closed the door. The two touched and Webber lost his front win with Glock having to limp back to the pits with a puncture.

The session was red flagged to clean up the mess.
