In Genes’ first ever Formula One qualifying he could not manage a time that was within 107% of Hakkinen’s pole position lap. Thus he was not legible to start the race. Minardi appealed and he was let into the race.

Marc gene’s race ended on lap twenty-six due to collusion with Jarno Trulli’s Prost. If was unfortunate for the Spaniard but since he failed to make the 107% rule in qualifying it is debatable whether he should have been in the race to get hit by Trulli at all.

Gene’s hopes of a strong showing in his home grand Prix were shattered at the start when the clutch burnt out as he made his getaway, stalling the engine in his Minardi. He was out of the race then and there.

Marc Gene had done a good job to qualify his Minardi in nineteenth place. However he blotted his copybook at the start of the race. He slewed across the track, clipping Jacques Villeneuve’s BAR. The BAR spun into Diniz’s Sauber. Both Diniz and Villeneuve were out of the race but Gene continued.
