He lost control of his Minardi under braking for the Varante Ascari chicane. He rolled the M95 though the gravel trap, bouncing off the guardrail before coming to rest in the gravel trap. Badoer was not put off the accident and he qualified his Minardi eighteenth.

He allowed his Lola to role forward and then he brought the clutch up to bump start the engine. He was able to get going but he retired form the race on lap-twenty one when his gearbox failed.
