Wendlinger, Karl (Sauber) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts In Thursday morning’s free practice Wendlinger crashed his Sauber C13 at the waterfront chicane. On his final lap of the session the Austrian broke later than was possible on what was his best effort of the weekend thus far. He entered the tunnel normally but he lost control of his car over a bump in the tunnel at 170mph. Wendlinger’s Sauber spun and smashed into the armaco that guarded the escape road. It was a relatively minor accident, one that you would have expected to see the driver walk away from. Wendlinger has sustained head injuries. A Scan at the Princess grace hospital in Monaco revealed he had a brain contusion and swelling. He was transferred to St Roch’s hospital in Nice where he lay in a medically induced coma while he recovered. He would not race again in the 1994 season but he made a comeback in 1995.

Lehto had a different account of the event, “I though he had seen me but then he suddenly turned in and hit my car.” Wendlinger was able to continue but Lehto was out there and ten with suspension damage.

As he approached the corner where his team mate had previously gone off at a brake disk shattered, pitching the Sauber into a spin that ended in the barriers. The Benetton B191b was pitched into a spin, from which Brundle recovered from neatly and with a minimum of fuss. His rear wing and diffuser were damaged in the incident but that would be of no consequence as the spin turn on full tanks had exerted enough force on the clutch to break it. He would be out on the first lap. Wendlinger would continue until lap fourteen when his engine over heated due to a the damage that one of the radiators has sustained in the incident.

Wendlinger, Karl (March) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Grouillard got a sluggish start in his Tyrrell, allowing the March of Wendlinger to pull alongside. Suddenly Wendlinger lost control of his March and he speared across the Tyrrell and straight into Capelli’s Ferrari who was overtaking Grouillard on the opposite side. The Ferrari slammed into the wall, Capelli’s race run. Wendlinger was out on the spot too.

Grouillard then spun across the track and was collected by the Jordan of Modena. The accident had claimed three cars and it was thought that the safety car might have to be deployed; it was not.

Wendlinger, Karl (Leyton House) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Zanardi snatched ninth place form de Cesaris at the end of lap two. Andrea immediately went on the counter attack. Suddenly his Jordan snapped into a spin. He would later claim that this had been due to debris on his tyres from an earlier move. Whatever the cause he spun across the track and collected both Pirro and Lehto, wiping out the entire Dallara team. Then suddenly Wendlinger arrived on the scene in his Leyton house, ramming the stationary Jordan of de Cesaris. The net result was four cars eliminated in one incident.
