3 pts | Dropping oil all over the track. After the carnage of the first corner Button’s Renault was left with only one sidepod. This was no good for button but he continued to driver until his car stopped a few meters later. This was no good for the rest of the field as he had dropped oil all over the track. In fact his team-mate, Trulli span off the track and into the wall on the oil that Jenson dropped. |

3 pts | Balking Montoya in qualifying. During Montoya’s first quick lap of the session, he came across the Renault of Jenson Button. The young Englishman was on his out-lap and he did not give way to the Colombian, effectively ruined Montoya’s lap. It was terrible driving from Button but who could blame him given the fact that it could be argued that Montoya occupied Button’s seat at Willaims. |

1 pts | Nudging Coulthard, damaging his Renault?s suspension. Coming into the first corner on lap thirty-four Button was being challenged by Coulthard. The Scot had edged his McLaren in front on the inside line and was easily going to pass Button. Clearly, Button’s tactic was to give as little room as possible and tuck up behind the McLaren so to set-up a re-pass as soon as possible. Button was over-eager to get right up behind Coulthard and turned in too soon. There was a slight contact between his Renault’s right-front wheel and the McLaren’s left rear but it was enough to throw the Renaults front suspension out of alignment. The resulting handling deficiencies would see Button drop form a podium challenging place on the track back to the tail end of the field. “I’m big time disappointed. The car wasn’t fantastic at the beginning of the race, with high-speed understeer and oversteer in the slower corners,” he explained. “We didn’t manage to adjust the car to correct it during the pitstops, and then I had the hydraulic problem. The steering got very heavy and it was as if somebody had switched the electric off towards the end! As for the Raikkonen incident, I didn’t see anything – I was too busy trying to avoid the wing on the track!” |

3 pts | Balking Heidfeld in qualifying. Sauber’s Nick Heidfeld was frustrated after qualifying. Button held him up on his fourth lap while the Englishman was on his out lap. Heidfeld was furious, as he believed that it might have been possible to get on the front row. None the less it was a poor bit of driving from Button. “It was all about traffic! I lost my first run because of the red flag, but gradually improved the car during the hour,” Button said. “At the end, I just went out at the wrong time – the car felt good, but there was traffic in front of me and behind, and I lost a lot of time at the start and the end of the lap. There was nothing I could do – I was unlucky today.” |

7 pts | Jumping the start, 8 points and 5 points for the drive-though penalty. At the start of the race Jenson Button, who was staring in eighth place on the grid jumped the start of the race but he immediately lifted off however he was unable to put the power down again and so dropped to seventeenth. The race officials noted the jump-start and Button was given a drive through penalty, which he served, on lap six, dropping him to twenty-first place. “I think I just got a little excited at the start! Once you lift off the throttle, the launch control doesn’t work any more, so I had to wait for everybody to go by before I could get going. After that, I was a bit surprised to be penalised as well, but once I got into clear air the car was working well,” Button explained. |

1 pts | Nearly overshooting his pit box on lap thirteen. Button made a fool of himself on lap thirteen. He came into the pits to take on intermediate tyres but was surprised to find Trulli in the team’s pit box. Confused, the Englishman did not know whether to park up and queue behind Trulli or return to the track to complete another lap. Button looked as if he decided he would queue but by the time the decision-making process had been completed he nearly over shot the pit box and was travelling at a dramatically reduced speed. Michael Schumacher was exiting the pit and was lucky not to collect the slow Renault. |

4 pts | Spin on lap twenty-eight. On lap twenty-eight three drivers spun and recovered. Button, Raikkonen and Coulthard were all on dry weather tyres and were struggling for grip on the wet track. It was little wonder they all pitted at the end of the lap to take on a more suitable intermediate type of tyre. |

1 pts | Engine failure in SFP1 due to pressing neutral. Button has been struggling with grip levels all weekend and the in the latter half of Saturday’s free practice session provided them with an ugly incident. Button’s car suffered a big engine failure, spurting lubricant all over the track and his rear tyres. The sudden loss of grip sent the Renault spinning into the retaining wall, damaging the car significantly. Luckily for Button he was unhurt and would not loose too much time as the incident occurred toward the end of the session. However he was using his qualifying engine and would have to use an under-powered unit for qualifying and he would have to miss the vast majority of the second session while his damaged car was repaired in time for qualifying. It would have been tough for Button if the engine blew of it’s own accord but the blow up was a result of the Englishman hitting the neutral button on his steering wheel by accident! |

1 pts | Touching Montoya in turn two. At the start of the race Montoya was slow away from his forth position. He moved to the right hand side of the track but bogged down further due to the dirt on the track. Coming into the first corner he was under threat from Button and Fisichella but he held station. Button was stretching every drop of performance from his Renault in an attempt to pass Montoya, so much so that he touched the Williams as he muscled past the Colombian. |

1 pts | Grass cutting moment in last corner on final lap (56) that lost Button 2 places B·A·R Honda’s Jenson Button enjoyed an almost perfect Grand Prix weekend at Sepang in the respect that he had beaten his hated teammate Jacques Villeneuve but a "last lap gaff took" the achievement’s polish away. What would have been a strong fifth place finish turned into seventh in the last corner when pressure from Jarno Trulli and Michael Schumacher and progressive oversteer took it’s toll. Exiting the back straight Button had managed to get along side Massa but Massa did not feel inclined to allow the room for the Englishman to pass. As a result Button took to the run off and gained the advantage. The stewards decided that was not allowed and Button received a drive through penalty. Button took the penalty on lap 18. |
