In the mêlée Panis’s Ligier collected the second Minardi of Martini who was knocked into Herbert‘s Benetton. With Alesi’s car stranded on the racing line, leaking oil and radiator fluid onto the track the race had to be red flagged.

Misc
Alesi, Jean (Ferrari) Stall on grid 7 pts In Saturday qualifying Alesi’s Ferrari rolled to a halt opposite Rascasse. The engine had stalled due to a hydraulic problem in the gearbox. He dipped the clutch and as the marshals were pushing the car to safety he let the clutch in and received what was effectively a push start. This was clearly illegal and the race stewards banned him from using his race car for the balance of the session.

Alesi, Jean (Ferrari) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Crashed out of the race on lap forty-one as he came across Martin Brundle’s spun Ligier in Tabac. The inevitable conclusion to Alesi’s emergency avoidance. Alesi later remarked, “I was pushing very hard and I think could have fought for the lead. But as had happened on previous occasions I found myself behind Brundle, who slowed me down for two laps even though he was a lap down and much slower than me. Despite being showed the blue flag Brundle was driving so much on the limit to block me he eventually touched the guardrail at Tabac and spun in front of me, I was so close I could not avoid the accident.”

In an interview he vociferously complained; voicing the opinion that the team were favouring his team mate Gerhard Berger over him with regards too race strategy and equipment. “Todt has been a problem for me all year and he has broken my balls. If it has to be like this I would rather not bother.” Ferrari fined Alesi $20,000 by Ferrari for his emotionally charged out burst!

Alesi, Jean (Ferrari) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Alesi span across the kerbs in an effort to avoid the wayward Minardi of Pedro Lamy. 1995 – Australian Grand Prix
Misc
Alesi, Jean (Ferrari) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Schumacher exited the pit-lane after his first stop just behind Alesi. Schumacher could not allow his new tyre advantage to slip him by and he needed to pass Alesi quickly. On lap twenty-three Schumacher drew up alongside Alesi on the Brabham straight. There was not way Alesi was going to give way and he swung his Ferrari into Schumacher’s Benetton. The Ferrari’s left front tyre hooked inside the Benetton’s left rear tyre. The Ferrari’s front wings were shredded and although Alesi kept ahead both were off the track a few meters later. Alesi pitted for a new nose cone. Schumacher later pitted to have his tyres investigated but had to retire on lap twenty-six due to the suspension damage that his Benetton had sustained. Schumacher was not happy, “It was a very unnecessary action that Alesi took because I was clearly fast than him. I don’t understand what was going on in his brain. Was it switched off? He’d better keep out of my way at the Benetton Party tonight because this wasn’t the way I want to finish my season. Ok the Williams were quick but I would have been happy to finish the season second here.”

1994 – Monaco Grand Prix
Misc
Alesi, Jean (Ferrari) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Alesi ruined his one stop strategy with a piece of immature driving. He was trying to lap David Brabham and the Australian had blocked him twice and so in the chicane after the tunnel Alesi muscled his way past, making contact and damaging his Ferrari’s nose cone.
“Brabham blocked me twice when I tried to pass him. First at Lowes, the next at the chicane after the tunnel where I could not avoid making contact… There are too many drivers in F1 who do not deserve a super-licence.” Brabham saw thing differently; “I was aware of Alesi closing behind me. I felt I had the racing line and I was going to let him past after that corner. To my amazement he lunged inside me before the chicane, hitting my offside rear wheel and breaking my suspension. End of story for me today.”

1994 – Spanish Grand Prix
Misc
Alesi, Jean (Ferrari) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Alesi made a huge cock-up on lap forty-two. He spun in the tight ess bends that lead on to the start finish straight. In his efforts to perform a “spin turn” to get him facing in the correct direction he collected the Jordan of Ruben Barrichello. The front suspension on both cars was terminally damaged and both retired on the spot. Rubens was mortified; “He just didn’t measure the distance between us. I am so disappointed because today I really believed I could have finished on the podium.”

1994 – Belgian Grand Prix
Misc
Alesi, Jean (Ferrari) Mouthing off 5 pts Jean Alesi and Martin Brundle had a fracas in the final moments of Friday Qualifying as the track dried. Alesi accused Brundle of baulking him badly on what he’d hope would be his fastest lap of the session. Alesi was running on slicks when he caught Brundle’s McLaren at La Source hairpin. In the run down the hill to Eau Rogue Alesi pulled along side Brundle but Brundle held his line and edged Alesi out. Alesi got past Brundle on the run up to Les Combs and he purposefully held the English man up on the run down to Balanchimont. Alesi was outraged after the session and stormed down to the McLaren pit to give Brundle a piece of his mind. Alesi voiced the opinion that Ron Dennis had only hired Brundle in 1994 as he could get no one else and he hoped he would be replaced in 1995 with someone with some “real talent.” “Alesi was shouting bad words in bad English. We’ve had our run-ins before at Brazil where were crashed and at Imola two years ago. After those incident he said he was going to kill me. He is a Hothead.“ Brundle commented. Alesi was unrepentant; “I don’t think that Martin’s actions were correct, so I went to tell him personally as I think these things should be discussed face to face.” Remarked Alesi, in a manner of total understanding.

Alesi, Jean (Ferrari) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Alesi came into the pits for his first pit stop at the end of lap fourteen. He was stationary for 7.8 seconds when he went to accelerate away. The Ferrari lurched forwards and ground to a stop. Alesi fiddled with the gear change leavers and managed to get the car to creep forward before it stalled again. Alesi unbuckled himself and stormed away form the car. Behind the garage he threw the keys to his Ferrari road car and drove flat out in a Alfa 164 all the way to his boat on the French Rivera. Ferrari’s official reason for his retirement at the timer was transmission failure. John Barnard later refuted the claim, revealing that Alesi had stripped the dog rings on the Ferrari’s first gear. He did this by selecting the ratio a millisecond before the clutch had engaged; “If he just clamed down, let the revs drop back and engaged third he could have probably got back in the race.”

1994 – Portuguese Grand Prix
Misc
Alesi, Jean (Ferrari) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts On lap thirty-nine Alesi had a miserable end to a miserable weekend when he plunged into the side of Davis Brabham’s Simtek whilst he was attempting to lap the slower car. Brabham accused Alesi of being overaggressive and Alesi reposted with the accusation that Brabham was not using his mirrors. Form a spectator’s point of view it looked as if Alesi had initiated an overtaking manoeuvre form too far back and Brabham was innocent. Brabham was given a one race suspended ban, much to the indignation of F1’s fraternity. Earlier in the year Brabham had been punted out at Monaco by Alesi and he now he did not mince his words; “I must say I was surprised to get hit but when I turned round and was that it was Jean Alesi I wasn’t surprised at all.”

Coming into Varante Ascari Alesi caught a glimpse of Berger in his rear view mirrors and moved to the left to let his team mate past. Berger moved to the left fractionally before Alesi and had to brake hard to avoid he sister Ferrari. Berger immediately lost control and span, his Ferrari slamming into the barrier on the left hand side of the circuit, then it rebounded across the track, skimmed over the gravel trap and slammed into the tyre barriers on the opposite side of the circuit. The right front wheel on Berger’s McLaren hit the left rear wheel on Alesi’s Ferrari with enough force to pitch the F92Athe air. It then landed heavily, half spinning back across the track, into the MP4/7B. Both men were out and both magnanimously put it down to a racing incident, “one of those things.” With no Ferrari left in the race the Tifosi left in droves.

At the start tyre conservation seemed to go out of the window as Alesi surged past Prost and then going into the first chicane on the second lap he attempted an extremely optimistic move on Patrese’s FW14. Alesi lost control of his F643 under braking and span across the high kerb into the gravel. It was an almost repeat performance of the last year’s race where he completed a similar manoeuvre in his Tyrrell. This time he was able to get back to the pits to have his nose cone replaced. Alesi, Jean (Tyrrell) Pit lane blunder 5 pts After running wide at the first turn on lap five Alesi was to make another error in the race. Coming in for his pit stop on lap twenty-two Alesi’s approach was far too hot and he missed his pit box completely. He had to complete one more tour before he was able to pit again. Alesi’s race ended with only four laps left when the CV joint on his Tyrrell failed. An artefact of running wide at turn one perhaps?

Alesi, Jean (Sauber) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts In qualifying Hakkinen was slowing coming into the last chicane on the track about to start his hot lap when Alesi came upon him on his hot lap. The loss of down force caused Alesi to straight-line the chicane and spin in front of Hakkinen, both of their laps in the bin. “As a result of this I did not get the chicane to improve my time.” Reported Hakkinen. “I had to ease up slightly because I didn’t want to catch Frentzen, who was a head of me, too quickly. I think Jean may have got too close and possibly lost front aerodynamics. He went straight and spun.” Most observers agreed it was six of one and half a dozen of the other.
