In his first Formula One race, Pacific’s new pay driver was an amazing twelve seconds off the pole time set by David Coulthard. Deletraz’s time would have only put him in twenty-second lace on the grid for the supporting F3000 race let alone the actual Grand Prix itself!

In his first Formula One race Deletraz had to retire with leg cramps on lap seventeen. The man should not have been allowed to race in Formula One. It is believed that Deletraz’s performance at Estoril was one of the factors that made the FIA impose the 107% qualifying rule for 1996.
