Due to problems with his own car Lehto started the race from the pit lane in the spare car. The trouble was that it was set-up for Wendlinger with his pedals and seat. Lehto started on slicks and after battling it out for thirteen laps he decided he was in too much discomfort and he pulled into the pits to retire from the race.

On lap twenty-four there was a misunderstanding between the two Sauber drivers at Loews hairpin. “I did not expect J.J. to attack me like that,” proclaimed Wendlinger “There was not room for both of us, so de drove his right-rear wheel over my left front.”
Lehto had a different account of the event, “I though he had seen me but then he suddenly turned in and hit my car.” Wendlinger was able to continue but Lehto was out there and ten with suspension damage.

As well as the Senna / Hill incident in the run down to the Varante goody year there was a five car pile up toward the back of the field that resulted in the elimination of J.J. Lehto’s Sauber, the Jordans of Apicella and Barrichello and the Footworks of Suzuki and Warwick. Hirotoshi Honda the boss of Mugen was at the first corner and was not pleased to see both his cars eliminated on the first lap of the race. The accident was probably triggered by Apicella losing control of his Jordan in his first race and avoiding action from one of the other drivers triggering the rest of the action.

Lehto was new to the Dallara team. His lanky frame was proving problematic at six foot one inch by Formula One standards he was a giant. His seat did not fit him correctly and the discomfort he was experiencing resulted in a loss on concentration that would cause him to crash in Friday’s Qualifying session. The problem was cured for Saturday with a new, bespoke seat.
