Foitek has only got a contract with Brabham for the first two races of the season. He spun his BT58 in the Friday Morning practice session but escaped without damaging the car. In the Friday’s Qualifying session a similar spin would see the entire nose section ripped from the car.

As the race was coming up to half distance the Swiss novice was beginning to become fatigued. This would result in a loss of concentration that would see his chop across the nose of Grouillard’s Osella on the long back straight. The Brabham was not clear of the slow Osella and the contact sent the Brabham spinning into the wall. Foitek escaped unhurt but he was visibly shaken. Grouillard’s Osella had sustained front suspension damage and he was able to nurse that car back to the pits to retire at the end of lap forty.

In his last race for Brabham Foitek made sure that the mechanics earn their money courtesy of some more that over exuberant driving. In Friday practice he spun his Brabham into a tyre barrier; surprisingly the car was only slightly damaged. Ironically virtually every component on the car had a problem during the two days of qualifying and he could only manage twenty-second place on the grid.

On lap fifty-four Foitek’s race came to a premature end. A fluffed gear change caused him to over rev his Monteverdi’s engine, in spectacular fashion, terminally damaging it.

Senna finished the first day in only eighth place after he had been badly baulked by Foitek in the Friday qualifying session. “I could see that his rear tyres were badly blistered and assumed he would move over,” recounted Senna, “but when he saw me in his mirrors he just accelerated hard. I can’t image what he was thinking about.”

Monteverdi were on the verge of collapse at the Hungarian Grand Prix. They turned out with only one trailer and both its cars were ill prepared. When Foitek spun to a halt in Saturday’s qualifying session with a broken wishbone his father, mindful of the accident that befell is some the previous year at Jerez when his Rial rear wing failed pulled his son from the team.
