Panis and Morbidelli were battling hard with each other. On lap twenty-nine the Ligier and the Footwork became entangled and both slid off the track and had to retire form the race.

On lap thirty-one Morbidelli and de Cesaris were both eliminated from the race. Fighting hard for position the Sauber and the Footwork came together and slid into the gravel. Both drivers were out on the spot.

On unlucky lap thirteen Morbidelli lost control of his Arrows on the second Degner curve in the appalling conditions. The front of the car was destroyed; the suspension torn form the car and the nose cone was long gone. The young Italian walked from the accident because the TUB had fulfilled it’d function and remained intact in the accident.

In low down force trim it was clear that the Minardi was more than a hand full. Both Zanardi and Morbidelli spent the two days of practice spinning on their way to sealing up the final two qualifying positions.

Morbidelli qualified his Minardi in twenty-first place after he had his best lap time deleted due to a driving indiscretion. In trying to take the fastest line onto the start finish straight he had cross the yellow line that designated the entrance to the pit lane.

After being pitched into a spin by Modena’s Tyrrell on the previous lap Morbidelli had his head down and when Piquet was trying to lap him on the next lap the two made contact. Morbidelli was pitched into a second spin in as many laps but this time he was out of the race.

In Friday qualifying Morbidelli crashed his Minardi after a misunderstanding with Jean Alesi. Alesi was slowing after is qualifying run in the drag up to Les combs and the reduction in speed was so great Morbidelli had to spin his Minardi to avoid a collision. On Saturday morning he cut across the chicane at the bus-top, damaging his under tray.

Morbidelli suffered a time consuming setback that would loose him a lot of set up time in Friday free practice when he spun his Minardi, damaging the rear of his Minardi.

In the final stages of the race Zanardi in his first ever Formula one race forced his way around the outside of Morbidelli’s Jordan in an audacious move. Morbidelli immediately fought back and the two cars touched. Zanardi continued unharmed but Morbidelli got on to the grass, spun off the track and then back on, only clobber his team mate’s car. Martini was not pleased at all; the left -rear wheel was torn of his sister Minardi. Giancarlo Minardi was not happy both cars out wit less than three laps to run.

Morbidelli lost control of his Minardi, Ferrari under braking for the tight chicane in Friday morning practice. The resulting accident showered the track with debris and the session had to be red flagged.

In Friday free practice Morbidelli wrote of a Dallara chassis when he punted his Scuderia Italia into one of the tracks concrete walls. To compound his woes further a brush with the wall in Friday qualifying in the afternoon was not what the car required.
