Fisichella, Giancarlo (Benetton) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts After the first refuelling stops Irvine was slowing his pace to act as shotgun to Michael Schumacher. Fisichella was stuck behind Irvine and was becoming impatient. On lap twenty-nine Fisichella attempted to overtake Irvine around the outside of the first corner. The Ferrari and the Benetton collided and spun into the gravel, out of the race. Fisichella was all over Irvine as they climbed out of their cars, blaming Irvine. The stewards sided with Irvine and fined Fisichella $7500. Irvine was philosophical, “He just came down the outside and turned in on me, taking the racing line despite the fact I was there. What did he expect me to do? Press a button and go into helicopter mode?” Fisichella had different ideas, I am very disappointed. I had already passed Irvine with most of the car and he should have let me through but he kept on going and it resulted in a collision.” Earlier in the race when the roles had been in reverse Fisichella had back off to let Irvine have the line.

Fisichella, Giancarlo Unsportsman like driving 3 pts Balking Montoya in qualifying.

In qualifying Fisichella balked Juan-Pablo Montoya’s only flying lap of the session. Fisichella was dawdling around the track quite slowly and held Montoya up for two consecutive corners. ”I had only one run and I think I lost about six or eight tenths because Fisichella held me up,” Montoya explained. “That was a bit disappointing because there was a lot more to come in the car. But anyway, I feel well prepared for tomorrow. In the morning session we have found out quite a few useful things.”

Fisichella, Giancarlo Deviousness 5 pts Fisichella?s reluctance to hand his car to Sato in qualifying.

Due to car problems Takuma Sato would have to use Fisichella’s chassis in qualifying. After Fisichella had completed his qualifying effort he sat in the car, seat belts still fastened refusing to leaver the car. This was bad form from Fisichella who new that Sato needed the use of the car to try and post a time to qualify for the race. Sato eventually was allowed into the Fisichella’s car but enough time had elapsed to prevent the mechanics switching the settings to Sato’s. “Today was a tough day,” Sato explained. “I did my best and what happened was nobody’s fault. Mechanical problems do happen. It was very difficult to drive Giancarlo’s car in the wet. It was his seating position and, for example, I had no heel rest so I was pushing the pedals with my feet in the air! Also the car had a dry set-up.”

Fisichella, Giancarlo Mouthing off 5 pts Fisichella?s outburst about Bridgestone tailoring their tyres to Ferrari, at the expense of the other teams.

There was a storm brewing in the pit-lane. It was nothing to do with the absence of Phoenix GP; it concerned new theories of favouritism toward Ferrari. Jordan had been struggling all weekend and earlier in the week Giancarlo Fisichella remarked Bridgestone, favoured the F2002 when it came to developing the 2002 compound tyres. Fisichella was of the opinion that the Bridgestone tyres were working well on the F2002 but as far as the EJ12 package was concerned, they left a lot to be desired. Bridgestone refuted the claims, suggesting that Ferrari tested for them more than any other team and as such Bridgestone rely on Ferrari’s data.

“After the last race at Imola I have read many articles saying that certain types of our tyres have been specially made for Ferrari but that is not right,” Bridgestone’s technical manager Hisao Suganuma said. “Obviously Ferrari does a lot of our testing but if our tyres are good for them, then they should be good on other cars as well. Of course teams specify preferences but if a tyre works well on one car, it should also operate within a certain window on the others. You could see in Malaysia, where our performance was not so good, that Ferrari and the other cars suffered to the same degree.”

Fisichella, Giancarlo Mouthing off 5 pts Publicly admitting he wished he had not moved to the Jordan team in 2002.

In the build up to the race weekend Jordan’s number one driver, Giancarlo Fisichella has publicly admitted he regrets moving to the team. Fisichella was turning into quite a rogue driver. He had previously been quite an affable chap but the adversity he had to cope with on a daily basis at Jordan was beginning to take its toll.

“My one regret is that if I’d stayed at Renault, I’d be doing much better now. But in August, when I had to decide, they were still three seconds back. The season started badly and has got worse.”

Fisichella timed his best run in qualifying to perfection, to claim a strong sixth place on the grid, the highest placed Honda engine runner. The session was not perfect for him by any means. A loss of control saw him cut the grass in the hairpin, ruining serious qualifying attempts from Button and Coulthard.

Fisichella, Giancarlo Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Spinning into Takuma Sato in the first corner of the race.

At the start of the race Juan Pablo Montoya and Ralf Schumacher dived into the first corner side by side. Schumacher was able to best his teammate and exit the first turn in the lead of the race. Further down the field the two Jordans collided. Giancarlo Fisichella lost control of his car and spun into Takuma Sato. Both drivers had to pit at the end of the lap to have the damage to their cars repaired. Fisichella was forced to retire form the race on lap twenty-seven when he found his car to be undriveable after the earlier collision.

“I’m not sure exactly what happened, but after the start I was braking into the first corner, and I think somebody pushed me out a little bit,” Giancarlo said. “I lost grip and went into Takuma’s car, which I’m very sorry about. Unfortunately there was so much damage to my car that it was undriveable and there was no possibility to be quick and continue racing. It is a disappointment to end my 100th Grand Prix this way, but I hope to forget it and I am looking forward to the next race.”

Fisichella, Giancarlo Spin out of session / race 4 pts Though the gravel in Friday Practice.

Fisichella’s Friday programme generally ran to script bar an unscheduled trip through a gravel trap.

Fisichella, Giancarlo Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Crash in Staurday practice 3 for style and 4 for speed plus 5 points for the red flag.

Fisichella crashed heavily on the exit of Estoril during the morning free practice session on Saturday morning. He was too hot on the exit of the corner on his out lap and put the front of the car over the kerb. This pulled the front wing off the car, which Fisichella ran over immediately. The wing lodged under the car lifting its four wheels, Fisichella was helpless. The Jordan skimmed over the surface of the gravel trap and torpedoed into the tyre barriers virtually head on. The red flags ensued . The Italian seemed a little shocked, but exited the car and stood unaided, and he was soon ushered back to the medical centre in the safety car. “Scan results showed no damage and Fisichella is expected to return to the circuit at approximately 1300hrs,” a statement from the team read. “However, on the advice of Professor Watkins, he will not participate in today’s qualifying session.”

Fisichella, Giancarlo Spin out of session / race 4 pts Spin in qualifying.

On his third run in qualifying Fisichella ran into trouble. Pushing hard through
the Fange Chicane, the Italian understeered to the outside of the corner under
braking and his rear wheel brushed the grass. The sudden loss of traction sent
the Jordan spinning into the gravel, where it became stuck despite Fisichella’s
best efforts. Fisichella abandoned the car and was lifted back to the pits on
a moped.

"I am very disappointed. It was a difficult qualifying as we were not
competitive today and our tyres offered no advantage,"
he said. "
I may have been able to find another half a second but unfortunately I lost my
race car during braking on the second outing. When you jump in the T-car it’s
always difficult as you aren’t as confident, but I did quite a good lap on my
last run. 14th is not very good, but considering the qualifying session I had,
it’s okay. I’m usually more confident in the race as that is where we are competitive.
I had a terrific race here last year and I haven’t given up on the hope of scoring
points this weekend, particularly if the weather conditions are right."

Fisichella, Giancarlo Unsportsman like driving 3 pts Weaving.

On lap six it was clear that Giancarlo Fisichella was going slowly as a train
of cars was forming behind the Italian. Villeneuve was heading the pursuers and
Fisichella weaved all over the track to keep the French Canadian behind. All came
to nought when Villeneuve put an aggressive move on Fisichella, on the next lap
Fisichella lost momentum after he rode a kerb too hard.

"As the race turned out, we had a real chance of getting 6th today
but I had a terrible start and then lost time behind McNish. It was a fair fight
but that wasn’t the case with Fisichella,"
fumed Villeneuve. "I
spent too much time stuck behind him and because of his strategy, we could have
been fighting together until the end of the race if his engine hadn’t blown. Generally
the car was working well and I pushed as hard as I could. Monza is going to be
difficult for us I think. It’s a real power circuit so we’ve got some work to
do in testing next week to find a way of making us more reliable."

Giancarlo Fisichella was only able to manage seven laps in the pre-race warm up, only for the reason that he ran too deeply into Turn 1, got out wide onto the gravel and ran out of road to make the turn. He slid across the gravel and beached his car just centimetres shy of the barrier.

Fisichella, Giancarlo (Jordan) Reverse on gridDamaging chassis by driver error 8 pts Reversing on grid: causing a gearbox failure

At the start of the parade lap Jacques Villeneuve failed to make a getaway form
his eleventh position due to a gearbox failure. Fisichella has qualified in fourteen
and on completion of the formation lap pulled into Villeneuve empty slot instead
of his own.

Fisichella looked like a bit of an idiot when he started to reverse back into
his correct grid position but as he manoeuvred excess heat built up in his car’s
gearbox that caused it to fail when the Italian initiated it’s launch control.

"I had a problem with launch control. We don’t know what was wrong
as we are still investigating,"
he said. "I have to look ahead
to the next race."

"The way the race turned out for us was quite disappointing because
there were points to be had and in the end we didn’t get them. Giancarlo made
a bit of a mistake at the start when he got in the wrong grid slot and had to
do a bit of manoeuvring. After that the clutch got too hot and the launch control
wouldn’t work correctly,"
added Gary Anderson, Jordan’s technical director.
