Tarquini and Gachot tangled in the early stages of the race. Tarquini lost three laps as he pitted to have a steering tie rod changed. Gachot finally retired at the end of lap twenty-one, his Larrousse’s rear suspension terminally damaged an artefact form the Tarquini incident.

Tarquini lost control of his Fondmetal on lap fifty-seven and spun off the track and out of the race. Curiously Lehto and Hakkinen both spun out of the race on the same lap.

Comas spun his Ligier in the first corner of the race. Boutsen collected his team mate’s spinning car. Herbert slipped past only to be hit by Comas as he came back across the track. Herbert’s Lotus was pitched in to a series of spin over the kerb, damaging the car’s front suspension. All three cars were out as was Tarquini who span his Fondmetal into the barrier trying to avoid the fracas.

Tarquini’s race was a short affair. He lost control of hi AGS on the very first lap. He was caught in the gravel trap and he had to retire from the race on the spot.

Tarquini was left groggy and with whiplash injuries after a massive accident in pre-qualifying which saw his AGS leave the track at 180 mph through Blanchimont due to a rear suspension failure.

Tarquini qualified twenty-fourth but was lucky to make the cut on account of a couple of spins and a loose under tray on his AGS in his best run.
