At the start of Q3 Massa left the pits forgetting the fact that cold tyres could mean a spin. After spinning in turn one, he was up to date on this for the 2011 season. He was able to continue.

Massa did not depress the clutch enough which caused the wheel to spin freely as he kept the revs up. This meant that the mechanics were unable to put the new wheel on the car.

Whilst Rosberg was clearly visible, this did not stop Massa colliding with Rosberg. Massa lost the front wing end plate on the back of the Mercedes

In a continuation of the battle from Loews, Hamilton and Massa were side by side through the tunnel. Massa, on the outside in the marbles, his the barriers damaging his car significantly.

The safety car was brought out to clean up the damage with it returning to the pits on lap 38.

Massa had been struggling in practice and almost had a tank slapper into the barriers. The Brazilian managed to catch it and carried on without any damage.

Unlike both Alonso and Vettel who had previously run wide on this corner, Massa tried to keep the car on the track rather than running with it. The result was a spin and an eventual collision with the wall.

Luckily for Massa he had light damage to the rear of his car and he was able to recover and carry on.

In the period following the race Massa approached Hamilton whilst he was being interviewed and patted him hard on the shoulder and said “Good job pal, very good!”

Later Massa commented to BBC Sport:

“Again, he cannot use his mind, Even in qualifying, so can you imagine in the race? He could have caused a big accident and he’s paying for that. I was in the middle (of the track) and then got a puncture, which cost me a lot.

“When the Safety Car came in I had the wrong tyres. The FIA must look at this and penalise him all the time. He can’t even listen to his father, so can you imagine he listens to me?”

Massa was quoted as saying “The incident with Hamilton? Honestly, I don’t understand why he wanted to pass at all costs: we were all in a line on our “out” lap and there was nothing to be gained from acting like that.”

Massa ran over the kerbs and dislodged them, forcing the session to be red flagged.

Support races had already had issues with the kerbs and some had been removed. In practice it seemed that the drivers were intent on removing the remaining kerbs.

Hamilton, ever on the attack, attacked Massa in the non-overtaking place of turn 5. As Hamilton approached Massa up the inside, checked his mirrors and turned in on Hamilton.

The stewards judged that Massa had been aware of Hamilton and had turned in anyway. Hamilton had tried to brake to get himself out of the way but it was not enough to avoid the collision.

Hamilton had a damaged front wing and was force to repair it in the pits.

Massa received a drive through penalty.

Massa, pushing he car to extremes, was short cutting the kerbs as much as he dared. He cut the corner too much and fell foul of the anti-cutting kerb which shattered his suspension. Massa ended up in the gravel and they yellow flags went out.
