3 pts | Massa?s extensive baulking of most of the other drivers in qualifying. Massa was the name that featured on almost every team’s press release after qualifying such had been his endeavours in the blocking department. It seemed like almost every driver on the grid had suffered at the young Brazilian’s hands as he created gaps in the traffic to facilitate his own qualifying runs. “Seventh position is disappointing when I was expecting to be in the top four,” explained Renault’s Jarno Trulli.said. “My first run was my only clear lap, and after that I hit traffic each time. Twice, Massa’s Sauber didn’t move out of the way, even though he was just cruising around. I’m very angry about it. Even so, I want to thank the team for all their work, because I’ve had a very good car throughout this weekend. It’s really frustrating, because we deserved better.” “The car was good throughout the whole session – I didn’t need to make any changes during the hour. I made a mistake on my third run, so I couldn’t improve then, but the problem at the end was Massa,” Jenson Button explained. “He slowed me down, just as for lots of other people, apparently. Something needs to be done about it.” “We were shafted big time by Massa,” said an angry Mark Webber afterwards, “We lost a bit of track time during qualifying with a hydraulic problem which meant we only managed three runs instead of four. I came out from my final run right at the end of the session when the track was at its quickest but also at its busiest. I was already two tenths of a second up on my first sector time when I came across Massa who was on his slow down lap.” |

1 pts | Ramming Bernoldi off the track 6 points, and 5 points for the subsequent drive through penalty. On lap twenty-eight the battle for tenth place between Enrique Bernoldi and Felipe Massa came to a head. Bernoldi had been harassing the Sauber’s gearbox for as they stormed down into Ste Devote. Bernoldi pulled an audacious manoeuvre, one of the best of the season to pass the Sauber around the outside before the two cars entered the braking zone. Bernoldi turned in as normal but Massa totally missed his braking point and pushed the Arrows right up into the escape road at the corner. . Bernoldi dropped all the way back to fifteenth place while Massa pitted for a new nose cone and returned to the track in eighteenth place. Massa was given a drive through penalty for causing an avoidable collision on lap thirty-two. “I had a pretty normal start and really enjoyed the first part of the race. I was quicker than Massa but when I overtook him he missed the brakes and pushed me off. I rejoined and was behind Irvine and Button and, although I could catch them, I couldn’t get past,” said Bernoldi. |

4 pts | Spinning after he put his left hand side tyres up on the grass in the run down to turn one at the start of the race. At the start of the race, pole sitter, Juan Pablo Montoya was unchallenged, as Barrichello was no longer behind the Colombian. In the run down to the first corner Felipe Massa was jockeying for position around the outside of the corner but he put his Sauber’s left hand side tyres up onto the grass and the blue car was pitched into a spin. Massa recovered and rejoined at the back of the field. “At the start Villeneuve was really slow away and I had to go round him. Unfortunately I had to go on the grass and spun, but luckily I didn’t hit anyone,” explained Massa. “The track was very slippery in the early laps, but I made up a lot of lost time by stopping sooner than most for intermediates, on lap 12. I stayed with intermediates after my second stop on lap 30, but they lost their edge so I had to come in for grooved tyres 10 laps later. I was quicker than several people ahead of me after that, but I’d lost too much time to score a point.” |

7 pts | Jumping the start 7 points plus 5 for the drive through penalty. At the start of the race Massa jumped the start by an incredible amount that launched him up five places by the first turn. The move could not have gone noticed and it looked like Massa knew he would be penalised and he maximised his advantage. The drive through penalty was inevitable. “At the start I made a mistake and release the launch control system a fraction too early. For safety reasons I had to keep going, and for a while I was in seventh place until I got my first drive-through penalty,” Felipe explained. “After that I got another one for crossing the white line on the pit exit; okay, it was my fault, but it’s quite tricky there and the line is dirty, and several other well-established drivers did the same thing later on. In my second pit stop there was a misunderstanding with the crew, and I think maybe something broke when I tried to rejoin the race. It’s a shame, because in between my adventures the car felt really good.” |
