Comas, Erik (Larrousse) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Comas hit Mark Blundell’s’ Tyrrell from behind at the start as the English man braked hard to avoid a collision with spun cars ahead. Blundell was pitched into a spin and stalled his Tyrrell’s engine and Comas had to pit to have his nose box replaced. Comas eventually finished sixth.

He had already served two stop-go penalties from pit lane speeding due to a malfunctioning pit lane speed limiter. On the second and final occasion he stormed away from the car rather than continuing. The “official” reason given by the team for his retirement was a malfunctioning clutch. Comas describe the events as “A shit end to a shit weekend.” He just frankly had had enough.

Comas, Erik (Ligier) Spin out of session / race 4 pts Comas made a silly error in the Saturday qualifying session. As he dived up the inside of Gugelmin’s Jordan under braking for Tosa he put his Ligier’s left front wheel up on to the kerb. The Gallic car was pitched into a spin and its Renault engine stalled. Fortunately a spectator was on hand to give Comas a lift back to the pits on a moped.

Comas, Erik (Ligier) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Comas was involved in a serious incident in the Friday’s dry qualifying session. Riccardo Patrese has slowed in response to yellow flags that were warning him of Gachot’s spun Venturi. Comas did not see the flags and he rammed the FW14 of the circuit. The chassis of the Williams was completely written off. The Ligier was seriously damaged too. Comas sat out Saturday to have his bruised legs massaged.

Comas, Erik (Ligier) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Comas spun his Ligier in the first corner of the race. Boutsen collected his team mate’s spinning car. Herbert slipped past only to be hit by Comas as he came back across the track. Herbert’s Lotus was pitched in to a series of spin over the kerb, damaging the car’s front suspension. All three cars were out as was Tarquini who span his Fondmetal into the barrier trying to avoid the fracas.

Comas, Erik (Ligier) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Comas had a massive shunt in Friday free practice, less than one hour into the session. Coming into Blanchimont, the 190mph left-hand bend before the pit entrance he spun his Ligier across the run off area and into the barrier. The car was flung back onto the track, the sudden deceleration knocking Comas out cold. Senna was the first driver on the scene and he stopped to offer assistance. Comas were unconscious for twelve minutes. He was air lifted to hospital where it was discovered that he was totally unharmed. Under the circumstances he was advised to take the rest of the weekend off.

He was to crash out of the race a couple of corners later. As he went off line he had picked up debris on his tyres that had reduced the amount of grip that they offered. Though he should have anticipated that.

Comas, Erik (Ligier) Engine problem 5 pts On lap five Comas over revved his Renault engine by a considerable amount due to a missed gear change. (The telemetry showed 17,800 rpm.) The engine was cooked and Comas was out of the race.

Comas, Erik (Ligier) Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts In the Saturday morning warm-up session Comas had a spectacular accident. Under braking for the Ostkurve chicane he locked his brakes and his Ligier snapped into a spin over the high kerbs. The kerbs flipped the car over on to its roll hoop and the car slid along the ground upside now before coming to rest. Comas was un-injured and recovered to baulk one of Mansell’s qualifying laps in the afternoon qualifying session. “I was on my second time lap when I lost control and the car spanned it to a spin. Then it somersaulted twice before coming to rest on the left side of the track.”
