1 pts | Cheekily re-passing Schumacher. Enrique Bernoldi was running in tenth position on lap sixteen. Schumacher was carving through the field after the first corner incident saw him pit for a new nose cone. Schumacher passed Bernoldi but at the next corner Bernoldi took the initiative and reposed the Ferrari. This was a bodacious move for Bernoldi, one that deserves our recognition. How often do you see an Arrows pass a Ferrari? (1 point.) “Even though I couldn’t finish the race today I have to say it’s one of the most enjoyable ones I’ve had so far,” he said. “My start wasn’t the best but I managed to pass a few cars on the first lap so I was pleased with my position. I had a great battle with Michael (Schumacher). He got past me but then I got past him, which was fun. I was due for my first stop on lap 21 but the car stopped when I had just half a lap to go. It’s a shame but I now have renewed confidence for my home race in Brazil.” |

1 pts | Accident in the race warm-up at turn one, (4 points for style and 3 for speed.) In the race warm-up there was a serious incident when Bernoldi hit the barrier at turn one, significantly damaging his Arrows in the process. The car lay stranded on the circuit; tongues of flame licking up its side from the damaged radiator. The safety car was deployed and when the medical car arrived on the scene, it parked to the left of the Arrows. As the driver of the car open the door he was to get the shock of his life as the Sauber of Nick Heidfeld rammed open the door of the car. Heildfeld had been unsighted my Michael Schumacher and not seen the scene of the accident into the blind turn. In avoidance he took to the grass and hit the medical car. |

1 pts | Pitted at the end of lap one for a new nose cone after hitting Frentzen. Bernoldi pitted at the end of the first lap after contact with his teammate, Heinz-Harald Frentzen had knocked the nose cone off his Arrows. “I had a good start but ran out of room at the first corner and touched the car in front which I think was my teammate,” he said. “The track was pretty slippery at the start and, with such a tight corner and so many cars, I had nowhere to go. It’s unfortunate as I could have had a great race today.” |

1 pts | Crash in Friday Free Practice One: 2 points for style and 2 for speed. During Friday Free practice Bernoldi spun and hit the barriers at turn six, twenty minutes before the end of the first session. The error cost him another twenty minutes of the second hour while the damage to his car was repaired. “I lost a lot of track time today after my spin in the first session but I think we pretty much caught up with ourselves,” the Brazilian said. “I had enough time to evaluate the tyres although we still have a bit of work to do with the balance of the car as we are struggling a bit there. The changes to the track are okay but the new complex is pretty slow.” |
