Naspetti’s race ended in the gravel on lap eighteen. He was fighting with his March tem mate Wendlinger and the two tangled. Naspetti speared off into the gravel and retirement from the race. Wendlinger continued to finish tenth.

Naspetti was new to Suzuka and a misfiring engine and a tangle with Alesi did not his in his qualifying quest. Luckily for him all twenty-six entrants were garneted a start, other wise his time that was ten seconds slower than Mansell’s pole would have not cut the mustard.
