Warwick finished qualifying in a disappointing seventeenth place. He admitted that he was having difficulty learning the circuit. “ My Basic problem is getting used to the circuit. For instance, I am having to count the gears every time I change down and while I am going quicker all the time it’s still taking me longer to learn than I thought.”

After his initial contact with Andretti at the start of the race Warwick was running in sixth place on the last lap. A huge downpour in the closing laps had made the track slippery in the extreme and Warwick was under no pressure but he put his Footwork into the tyre barriers on the last lap, loosing the last championship point.

Warwick retired form the race on lap thirty. A trip through the gravel on lap four had seen him make an early tyre stop. He was back in again five laps later to change to slicks. There after he ran quickly until he spun his FA13 into the barriers on lap thirty.

Both Footwork drivers were having problems getting their cars to run well over the bumps. In the cool Friday qualifying they suffered from an acute lack of grip. Things were improved for Saturday but due to the higher track temperatures an improvement in time required a “do or die” effort. Warwick was trying very hard and he lost control of his Footwork on the bumps. He bounced, hard over the gravel trap. This damaged the front wing of the car as well as leaving Warwick with some serious bruising.

Warwick had a huge accident in the warm up, totally destroying his Footwork. The session was wet and Luca Badoer was slowly touring along in his Lola after a near miss with one of the Tyrrells, only to be hit from behind by Warwick at over 160 mph. The impact tore the left-hand suspension of Warwick’s FA14, turning the English man into a helpless passenger. The FA14 slid along the track and began to bounce and it then lurched into the left hand barrier before bouncing back across the track, into the gravel trap where the snagging effect of the gravel saw the Footwork turned over on to it’s roll-over hoop. The session was immediately red flagged. Amazingly the only injuries sustained by Warwick were bruising and a little shakiness. Warwick was well pleased with the morning’s work, “I remember seeing Aguri’s face. You know how brown it is? Well it was white!” Warwick describing his team mate’s reaction to the crash.

On lap six Both Warwick and Suzuki went off the track at the right hander coming into the stadium section. Suzuki escaped damage by the skin of his teeth but Warwick’s FA14’s nose cone was damaged and he lost a sizable amount of time by pitting to have the damaged nose box replaced.

As well as the Senna / Hill incident in the run down to the Varante goody year there was a five car pile up toward the back of the field that resulted in the elimination of J.J. Lehto’s Sauber, the Jordans of Apicella and Barrichello and the Footworks of Suzuki and Warwick. Hirotoshi Honda the boss of Mugen was at the first corner and was not pleased to see both his cars eliminated on the first lap of the race. The accident was probably triggered by Apicella losing control of his Jordan in his first race and avoiding action from one of the other drivers triggering the rest of the action.

Warwick had to abandon the spare Lotus out on the track in Saturday qualifying after he locked it’s brakes up and slid into the gravel trap at Acqua Minerale.

On lap sixty-eight Warwick, having moved up to fifth place spun his Lotus at the exit of the second swimming pool chicane and stalled its Lamborghini engine. He was out of the race. Due to a Marshalling mix up the race leader, Senna almost hit the stranded Lotus. Suffice to say that Derek needed a new pair of underpants after the incident.

At the start Piquet lost control of his Benetton under braking for La Source and went sideways. The wayward Benetton collected Mansell’s’ Ferrari and pitched it in to the wall. Behind all this Derek Warwick took his Lotus off the track in avoidance only to be hit from behind by his team mate, Donnelly (who had been hit too,) as he rejoined the track. In the pre-race briefing the organisers stipulated that they would not red flag the race if an incident like this occurred. They performed a swift u-turn and red flagged the event. Piquet and Mansell took the spare cars but the spare Lotus went to Warwick so Donnelly headed off to help the BBC with their commentary.

Warwick lost control of his Lotus on lap one in the middle of the Parabolica. He put one of his Lotus’s right hand side wheels on to the grass and by his own admission was following Gugelmin’s Leyton house too closely. The car snapped away from him and flew straight into the tyre wall. The destroyed Lotus bounced back into the middle of the track, landing upside down. The red flags were a formality. Warwick ran back to the pits to get to the spare car so that he was able to take the re-start, twenty minutes later from his grid position rather than from the pits.

In the charge up to the first corner of the race Warwick was in determined mood as he edged Gugelmin up on to the grass. Gugelmin survived but he lost a couple of places.
