Gachot tangled with Grouillard’s Tyrrell on the forth lap of the race. In the incident he would bend a steering arm on his Larrousse and this forced him to retire on lap nine even though he had pitted to have the problem attended to.

Tarquini and Gachot tangled in the early stages of the race. Tarquini lost three laps as he pitted to have a steering tie rod changed. Gachot finally retired at the end of lap twenty-one, his Larrousse’s rear suspension terminally damaged an artefact form the Tarquini incident.

On lap three Gachot and Katayama collided with each other at the Old Pits Hairpin. Of the two-team mates Bertrand came off the worse while Katayama continued unabashed he had to pit for a new nose cone.

Grouillard pushed Gachot off the road at the old pit hairpin on lap fourteen, just after he had made his first pit stop. Bertrand was given a push start by the marshal and he was black-flagged. Rough justice indeed.

In the confusion at the Adelaide hairpin caused by Schumacher’s move on Senna, Gachot had rammed Suzuki and Gachot was out. Chiesa has also had an altercation with Gugelmin the resulting damage to both cars spelt early retirement from the race for them both. In the melee Grouillard had the nose box taken off his Tyrrell and he needed to pit.

Car problems had prevented Gachot becoming familiar with the Hockenheimring. As a result he would spin off the track and into the barriers in Saturday qualifying. With the T car out of action he was forced to take to the track in Katayama’s car.

A thirty-second pit stop due to a sticking wheel nut had put Gachot down the order. He was carving his way back through the field when he came up to his Venturi team mate, Katayama on lap forty. There was a misunderstanding between the two drivers coming into the Casio chicane tat resulted in heavy contact between the two cars. Gachot was out of the race and Katayama was sent scuttling into the pits. . Katayama was sent back out even though his gearbox was now leaking over the track: he eventually finished a distant eleventh.

Gachot had to park his Jordan on lap thirty-nine. An earlier spin had resulted in damage that brought the Jordan to an early demise.

Gachot had a wild spin at the final chicane. He was fortunate not to have damaged his Jordan on the high kerbs or on the concrete retaining wall. He continued with no ill effect.

Gachot had reversed into the qualifying session when it was discovered that in pre-qualifying Nicola Larini’s Lambo has a rear wing that was outside the allowed dimensions. In Friday’s qualifying Gachot blotted his copybook when he ran wide on the entrance to Peratla, got onto the dust and the loss of grip caused the Jordan to spin heavily into the barrier. The session was immediately red flagged. Although the monocoque was undamaged the car needed a new rear suspension, front right-hand corner, rear wing support, front wings, diffuser and rear bodywork.

Piquet’s retirement form the race due to a rear wheel bearing failure had promoted Gachot’s Jordan into the final points scoring position. Unfortunately for him and Jordan he lost control of the Jordan in Peralta. This was attributed to him accidentally finding neutral instead of fifth gear. The resulting spin left the Jordan stuck in the gravel, it’s race run after completing fifty-one of the race’s sixty-seven laps.

Gachot was out of the first French Grand prix to be held at the Magny Cours circuit on lap one. In the first corner his Jordan suddenly snapped away from him and he slid of the track. “I thought I might have been touched by somebody else but there was no mark on my car, so I am not really sure what caused it.”

Gachot’s whole season with Jordan had been driven with storm clouds looming overhead. Even before he has tested the J191 he has been involved in accident with a taxi driver. Gachot had been driving to see Eddie Jordan in an Alfa Romeo owned by his fiancee. He had a slight collision with a taxi and in the ensuing altercation he sprayed CS gas at the taxi driver. He was charged with the assault as well as possession of a prohibited weapon. At the hearing on the Tuesday before the Grand prix he was found guilty by a ten to two majority and he was given a custodial sentence and ordered to pay £5000 compensation as well as costs by Judge Gerald Butler. This freed up his Jordan seat for one Michael Schumacher.

Gachot failed to qualify his Coloni for the 1990 Italian grand prix. A shortage of engine meant he had to sit out Friday’s session and when he slid wide at the Parabolica he had to take the T-car. He was just not able to build up enough speed.
